Gomo was speaking to 11 upcoming artistes on Wednesday who were attending a week-long vocal and performance arts training workshop that ends today at Lake Chivero.

He said self-discipline was the key for upcoming artistes if they were to become great musicians who could be recognised both locally and internationally.

“Venturing into music is not just about motivation and passion. Although those are very important aspects, they are completely useless and non-existent without having the self-discipline,” Gomo said.

“As young upcoming musicians, you must stay away from drugs which many aspiring musician believe is the impetus for a good performance.”

Gomo said a competitive music industry required artistes to be academically validated so as to know and understand music from an academic standpoint.

“Aspiring musicians may dream of big money and fame in the music business, but it is hard work getting there. It is important for an artiste to stay organised and to keep focused which is necessary to perform at a professional level,” he said.

“Artistes should appreciate that music is not a hobby, but a business which they can survive on hence the need to take it seriously.” Speaking on the sidelines of the workshop, Alexio Kawara challenged upcoming artistes to be creative through composing value-laden songs with the capacity to transform people’s lives and stand the test of time.

“Upcoming artistes must aim to think in an artistic manner which is creative and compose long-lasting messages in songs which even future generations would be able to listen and enjoy the music,” he said.

Some of the upcoming artistes who were attending the workshop were randomly drawn from different places like Marondera, Beitbridge, Bindura, Kadoma and Harare said they were ready to change approaches they used to apply to their trade in line of a business approach.

After the workshop, the artistes are going to record an 11-track album called Gifted with each contributing a song while two tracks will be recorded as a group.

Some of the songs to be recorded were composed by the trio of Gomo, Kawara and Dereck Mpofu and Minister of Youth, Indigenisation and Economic Empowerment Francis Nhema, who is the patron of the organisation.

The artistes are going to be featured on the trio’s projects and will also get the opportunity to share the stage with them during their live shows.

The workshop meant to nurture untapped talent and help them record their projects was being conducted by musician Mpofu, Kawara and Gomo who have united to establish PaxAlexio and Dereck Arts (Pad Arts) aimed at promoting upcoming musicians at grassroots level.

Mpofu was concentrating on vocals, Gomo on grooming while Kawara was centred on song writing.
