It was a usual quiet morning in Highfield suburb, with men, women and children dashing to their workstations or schools respectively.

The daily routine day was however, suddenly disturbed by two huge ‘boom’ sounds where the main High-Glen Road meets Gwebi Street.

What had just happened, a white commuter omnibus travelling along High Glen Road and luckily occupied only by the driver, had just ploughed into a Nissan Sunny Super Saloon car that failed to give way as it entered high Glen road from Gwebi Street.

On impact, the minibus ‘flew’ off the road and only stopped when it hit a tree, just a few metres from a built-up residential section of Western Triangle.

The Nissan was knocked onto the verges of High-Glen Road.

The minibus driver, a short middle aged man walked out without any injuries and paced towards the salon car, where a young man- probably in his twenties, emerged from the driver’s seat and started apologising for disobeying the road rules.

As it turned out, the young man is a holder of a learner driver’s licence and was not accompanied by a licensed driver as required by the law.

Beer bottles were also found in the salon car.

The Nissan driver- who had fear written all over his face- ended up taking refuge at the back seat of his wrecked car.

Fortunately, police acted quickly and arrived at the scene to record the details of the accident.

But unfortunately, the vigilant cops came poorly equipped with no reflective clothing or police barriers, and they had to beg the bystanders to keep off the road.

These are some of the life risks that Zimbabweans face on a daily basis- a cocktail of unlicensed and/or drunk drivers, ‘speed demons’, poorly-equipped cops, bad roads, among others.
