LOVERS of outdoor leisure centres in the southern suburbs of Harare could soon be smiling with the reopening of Colour Purple Leisure Centre scheduled for Sunday.

Proprietor of the joint Mai Jojo (real name Karen Madake) told NewsDay she had encountered several problems after a fire gutted the place in 2012 resulting in numerous court battles.

Mai Jojo also suffered poor health around the same time and had been failing to raise the finances to rebuild the place.

“We have spruced up its image, there is now a large thatched gazebo with a high table area pitched on the far corner of the gazebo, an events planning area, one outside bar while the other bar is inside, a bigger braai and a variety of traditional dishes that will be served that are likely to win the hearts of many people who love outdoor entertainment,” Mai Jojo said.

She said on the opening day fans would be treated to a jam session which will be free of charge running throughout the day until the wee hours of the night.

The opening jam session is going to be followed by the official opening party where giants in the music industry are expected to perform on a date to be announced as the leisure centre owners are in the process of wooing musicians Jah Prayzah, Sulumani Chimbetu and Alick Macheso to perform at the opening show.

In its heyday Colour Purple Leisure Centre was a favourite for many as it is located closer to the southern suburbs and provided a good hideout.

On the other hand, its environment was suitable for family outings and it used to compete with other outdoor entertainment joints such as Mereki, Zindoga, Farai, Globe Trotter and Pamview.

As it is eyeing its return, it must brace up for stiff competition from established joints including the new kids on the block namely Junction 24 and Family 24 among others.
