Nguru won last year’s edition, but his absence this year opens up the field as amateurs from different golf clubs around the country will be out to win the prestigious tournament which was revived last year.

Warren Hills Golf Club captain Charles Makirimani said all clubs were required to send a representative to the Champion of Champions National Trophy.

“Following the recent successful conclusion of Club Championship tournaments at all golf clubs across the country, all winners, first and second runner-up qualify to compete in the Champion of Champions National Trophy to be played at Warren Hills Golf Club on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 June 2014.

“Every club is required to send its representative. The Champion of Champions National Trophy is a Zimbabwe Golfers’ Association- sanctioned tournament therefore all participants should be affiliated,” said Makirimani.

Some of the players that are expected to feature include young rising sensation Kieran Vincent, who was crowned the club champion at Royal Harare, beating former Champion of Champions winner Gary Thompson.

Hosts Warren Hills Golf Club will be represented by seasoned golfer Stephen Hazangwi while top junior golfer Stuart Krog will represent Chapman Golf Club.

The Champion of Champions National Trophy gives club champions across the divisions from all golf clubs in the country a chance to battle for the title of champion of Zimbabwe.

Meanwhile, Claremont Golf Course-based Robson Chinhoyi lifted the Manicaland Amateur Championship at Hillside Golf Club on Sunday.

Chinhoyi carded round of 70-77- 69-69 for a gross of 285 to hold off the challenge of the defending champion Ray Badenhorst who finished with a gross of 293. Travis Smith finished third while Ben Follet-Smith and Stuart Krog finished in a tie for fourth position.

The Manicaland Amateur Championship was the second tournament in the five-part Eisenhower Trophy qualifying series.

Justin Kirsten won the first tournament after winning the Matabeleland Amateur Championship at Bulawayo Golf Club last month.
