MDC-T youths yesterday said they would commemorate this year’s Day of the African Child on June 16 under protest as the government had failed to provide the jobs it promised to create before last year’s elections.

MDC-T youth assembly national spokesperson Clifford Hlatywayo said at a Press conference, the 2,2 million jobs Zanu PF promised to provide had become elusive, 11 months after the elections.

“The job situation has not changed, as more job losses are experienced daily with companies folding under the current liquidity crunch, forcing millions of youths out of employment,” Hlatywayo said.

“As youths, we are demanding that the government puts some systems and polices in line with the new Constitution moving away from policies that are retrogressive and do not inspire confidence into the economy, negatively affecting social services such as the education sector.”

He said youths wanted jobs and equal opportunities for them to realise their maximum potential as economic players.

“MDC youth assembly calls for the abandonment of the partisan, anti-investor and non-consistent policies being pursued by the Zanu PF government like the ZimAsset and the indigenisation policy,” Hlatywayo said.

He said government was obliged to ensure compulsory and free basic education for children as well as promoting higher and tertiary education.

“It is universally acknowledged that education plays an important role in the development of the individual and the country. The right to education is enshrined in various international, regional and national human rights instruments including the Declaration of Human Rights and the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights,” he said.

Hlatywayo said Zimbabwe was in a sorry state as the government had failed to provide for this basic right with over a million children failing to go back to school because the government failed to secure funding for the Basic Education Assistance Model.

“As we commemorate the Day of the African Child, the MDC Youth Assembly demands that the government acts towards creating a well-governed, managed and administered education system that produces world-class citizens,” he said.
