THE popular Chibuku opaque beer brand takes its search for talent to Mashonaland Central and Masvingo provinces today for their annual Chibuku Neshamwari traditional dance competition.

Now in its 51st year, the brand Chibuku, through the competition, has churned out a number of talented traditional dancers who have made names for themselves on the local showbiz.

A number of traditional dance groups will converge at Club Changaz, Centenary, Mashonaland Central today while in Masvingo participates will battle for honours at Farai Beer Hall.

The 13th edition of the competition which rowed into life last weekend in Mashonaland West at Nherera Beer Hall in Kadoma will spread to different provinces with the preliminary competitions going to be held on June 14, with the next phase scheduled for July 26.

One group from the country’s 10 provinces will battle it out to for cash prize at the national grand finals to be held on August 23 at Harare gardens.

Winners at the grand finals will walk away $4 000 richer while the second place and third place winners will pocket $3 000 and $2 000 respectively.

Delta Beverages marketing manager Patricia Murambinda told NewsDay that they will remain committed to the development of arts in Zimbabwe through the company’s Chibuku brand.

“Through our Chibuku brand we value the privilege of promoting and celebrating our culture and heritage with the aim of affording aspiring young musicians a chance to discover their talent,” Murambinda said.

“The main idea of the Neshamwari Dance Competition is to encourage local artistes to appreciate traditional dance and thus promot and preserving Zimbabwean Culture.”

Delta Beverages, through their popular Chibuku beer brand, began sponsoring the dance competition at its inception in 1963 promoting the development of music through identification of groups with potential to produce recordable material and assist winning groups in documenting their work.

The competition is run as a tripartite partnership among title sponsors Delta Beverages and technical partners National Arts Council and the Zimbabwe Traditional Dance Association.

Over the years, Chibuku Neshamwari finals have been characterised by pomp and fanfare. The event has also proved to be one of the country’s biggest and most successful talent identification platforms.
