That is the story of Samantha Mapuranga, a Form 6 student at United Success Academy in Marondera.

Of course, Zimbabweans have witnessed the likes Ras Pompy and Spiderman showing energy on the scene, the girl popularly referred to as Sama-Slim has sought out to represent the fairer sex.

The young artiste, who hails from Cherutombo suburb in Marondera, is currently working on an album set to be released in August.

Titled Marondera, the album carries 10 tracks that include Dancehall Istran, Ndadya Nduru, Forever and Ndomirira Marondera, among others.

“I was born and bred here and l have realised that Marondera is secluded in terms of dancehall hence I wrote a song about it,” she said.

Sama-Slim said the track titled Ndomirira Marondera is about a girl who has been in the music industry for a long time and is declaring that it is now the time for her small town to be recognised.

“Many still think dancehall is about Harare alone and that has to change,” she said.

“It is very difficult to rise here as there are no promoters and it is rare to get a chance to perform especially because I am a schoolgirl.”

Among her achievements so far, Sama-Slim has curtain-raised for Freeman, Winky D and King Shaddy while she is also expected to share the stage with King Shaddy this weekend.
