AN unlicenced Mutare kombi driver who lost control of his vehicle and hit two schoolchildren, killing one of them on the spot, was last Friday sentenced to 27 months in prison.
OBEY MANAYITI
Malvern Maromba (22) was sentenced on his own plea of guilty to culpable homicide when he appeared before Mutare magistrate Sekai Chiundura.
The court heard that the accident occurred on June 17 this year, after Maromba took the vehicle from his elder brother, a certified kombi driver, and drove it without a valid licence.
On approaching an intersection in Sakubva, he lost control of the vehicle, rammed into a street lighting pylon and hit two students who were walking by the roadside.
One of them, Tatenda Chadambuka, died on the spot, while the other one, Hamon Matikiti, was seriously injured.
Apart from the jail sentence, Maromba was also banned from driving any motor vehicle for the next five years.
