DYNAMOS goalkeeper George Chigova is set to leave for South Africa on Thursday to his new club Supersport United for pre-season training, which begins on June 23.

The big goalkeeper was, however, on the bench on Sunday as the defending champions suffered a 1-0 defeat to Hwange at the Colliery.

Artwell Mukandi was thrown into the fray as coach Kalisto Pasuwa started to prepare for a new life without the towering stopper.

Chigova said yesterday his air ticket had already been sent and was scheduled to fly out to South Africa on Thursday.

“I am leaving for SuperSport on Thursday. My air ticket was sent on Friday,” Chigova, who last week revealed his sadness to be leaving the Harare giants, said.

“It’s sad that I will be leaving Dynamos — the team that helped me to be what I am today.

“These things happen in football, but at the same time, you also need [new] challenges as a player. I am also happy at the same time to be leaving Dynamos after winning three league titles. I hope I will be able to get a first team shirt at SuperSport. It will not be easy, but if I work hard it will be possible.”

Chigova was signed by SuperSport United after an impressive performance in national colours at the African Nations Championships (Chan) tournament early this year.

He proved his heroics between the posts at the Chan tournament where Zimbabwe reached the semi-finals — their first time to achieve that feat since the tournament designed exclusively for home-based players was inaugurated some four years ago.

The keeper manned his goal jealously at the tournament, conceding just two goals in open play and was also the hero in the penalty shootout against eventual champions Libya after saving two penalties in the 5-4 defeat which saw Zimbabwe crashing out of the tournament at the semi-final stage.

That heroic show caught the eyes of SuperSport United, who immediately swooped on the Zimbabwean goalkeeper.

Chigova is not the only player leaving the local league.

Hwange’s Eric Chipeta jets off to Chippa United in Cape Town after signing off with a winning goal against Dynamos on Sunday.

The Warriors defender converted a penalty in the 37th minute and leaves Hwange at the top of the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League.

Highlanders midfielder Milton Ncube is going to Ajax Cape Town where he has signed a two-year deal, while teammate Peter “Rio” Moyo is headed to Mpumalanga Black Aces in the same league. Kuda Mahachi will join Mamelodi Sundowns.
