Collin Mapfumo said this at the Chitungwiza Magistrates’ Court where he was dragged by his ex-wife Angelica Nyamadzawo who was claiming $1 200 for the upkeep of their children.

The court heard that Mapfumo, who runs a taxi business, had not been providing for his children since the couple separated in March.

“I am not financially stable at the moment. I cannot offer them anything. I was running a taxi business, but all the motor vehicles broke down in December last year,” he said.

“I am not in a position to give them anything yet because I’m still trying to repair the cars.”

Nyamadzawo, however, said the taxis were still operating, insisting her former husband realised $4 000 from the business, but had not paid fees for the children for this term.

“He has four taxis and he gets around $4 000 per month, but he is failing to provide for the children. Our first born, who attends boarding school, hasn’t gone to school yet since the term started. He even gave the other taxi that I bought to his girlfriend whom he is staying with,” she said.

Mapfumo was ordered to pay $800 a month by Magistrate Gofa for the upkeep of his four children aged 16, 11, five and two.
