BEATRICE — Three people died while five others were injured when a haulage truck collided head-on with a Harare-bound fuel tanker at the 69km peg along the Harare-Masvingo Highway on Monday night.

According to a witness, Charles Macheke, the haulage truck’s propshaft broke resulting in the driver losing control of the vehicle which sideswiped a Zambia-bound truck before the head-on collision with a fuel tanker.
The accident, which happened around 10pm, disturbed the flow of traffic for several hours causing long traffic jams between Harare and Chivhu.
When NewsDay arrived at the scene yesterday morning, wreckages of the accident-damaged trucks were being removed from the scene. The deceased are the truck owner, Gilson Vutete Mazorodze, of Glen View 3, as well as the driver and owner of the consignment in the haulage truck whose names had not yet been established by the time of going to print last night.
The fuel tanker’s driver and his assistant survived the crash and were said to have been ferried to Parirenyatwa Hospital.
Mazorodze’s brother, Mvicha Mupinga, said the truck was heading to Gweru via Mvuma where it was going to offload stockfeed.
“After watching the World Cup game between Germany and Portugal, we parted ways with my brother. He was on his way to sign a contract to transport cotton from Gokwe after dropping the consignment (stockfeed) in Gweru,” Mupinga said.

Contacted for comment, police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi referred questions to the traffic section.
But national traffic police spokesperson Inspector Tigere Chigome was not available on his mobile phone.
