WARRING MDC-T factions yesterday came face to face for the first time since their fallout in February, but avoided each other in the presence of diplomats and the business community.

Embattled MDC-T leader Morgan Tsvangirai, his former secretary-general Tendai Biti and suspended deputy treasurer-general Elton Mangoma met for the first time in the capital during the occasion of bestowing of former Harare mayor and businessman Muchadeyi Masunda with the Federal Cross of Merit.

He was bestowed with the honour by Germany President Joachim Gauck who was represented by Ambassador, Ulrich Klockner.

When the MDC-T faction leaders met, it was the body language and their avoiding of each other that spoke volumes of the intensity of the failed relations.

First to arrive was Guardian Council member Sekai Holland who the renewal team reportedly wanted to lead their cause. She was accompanied by Lucia Matibenga, a senior MDC-T official and former minister of public service.

Women assembly chairperson Theresa Makone was to arrive immediately after followed by Mangoma, who engaged in discussions with diplomats where he did much of the talking.

Next to arrive was Biti who was immediately followed by Tsvangirai.

The former Prime Minister greeted among others, Masunda and his family before engaging in a more than 10-minute-long discussion with Harare mayor Bernard Manyenyeni on business investment issues.

During the interaction, European Union Ambassador to Zimbabwe Aldo Dell al Ariccia, economist Eric Bloc and MDC-T official Eddie Cross mobbed Tsvangirai for discussions while US Ambassador to Zimbabwe Bruce Wharton and other European business people were in a discussion with Biti a few metres away.

There was hardly a moment members of the two MDC-T factions stood and chatted with each other, an indication of deep-rooted acrimony between the two parties.

Mavambo/Kusile/Dawn leader Simba Makoni, who also attended the function, interacted easily with members of both factions and the business community.

Mangoma and Tsvangirai’s relations turned sour beginning of this year after the former Energy minister wrote a letter to the ex-premier advising him to quit and allow for leadership renewal in the party.

But this angered Tsvangirai and his sympathisers who viewed it as a coup attempt.

Biti joined in the anti-Tsvangirai chorus and together with other leaders including some MPs and other officials, fired Tsvangirai from the party.

Other senior MDC-T officials that have called for the former Prime Minister to step aside include party treasurer-general Roy Bennett, former Harare mayor Elias Mudzuri and Marondera MP Ian kay.

Speaking at the occasion, Klockner said Masunda was the first Zimbabwean born person to recieve such honour.

Economist Eric Bloc got the same honour in 2002 while six others from Germany received the honour in the 80s and 90s.

Masunda said he was grateful for being honoured in such a manner and singled out Tsvangirai for making him mayor allowing him to revive Harare-Munich relations during his tenure.

  1. Even parufu enemies console each other wani! Why dont you guys organise rallies kumaZigo (Zim Grounds) so that you can see kuti ndiani ane chaunga. After all Diplomats dont vote!

  2. my opinion is simba makoni is the man Zimbabwe sld hav as a leader, but we are too blinkered to see wat is really in simba. is he power hungry.. ngationesane we need leaders guys for the betterment of you and me.

    • Simba didn’t have the guts to stand up to ZANU(PF) at the time when people had no leader. Remember in 1998 when people rioted? Infact we thought he would use his demotion at Zimpapers to leave.

  3. If u are begging foR money u don’t need to rush. Ndomukana wavawana wekutokumbira nawo mari kumaDiplomats there is nothing to bost about. Kkkkkkkk but uuuh politics dzedu dzakadhakwa kutadza kumhoresana kwese yaaaa hatred n selfishness rega timirire 018 zvedu

  4. Us and deplomats havataure neZanu pf.Saka even Save vakapinda tinenge tiri pamasunctions ,cause they think Tsvangirai is Zanu pf.””hezvoko bwa.nekoko bwa”

  5. Interesting that Masunda should state that Tsvangirai made him mayor. The fact of the matter is that the Executive council of the MDC faction headed by Tsvangirai discussed the issue after Masunda’s name was put into the ring by some other NEC member, not Tsvangirai. There was no objection from Zanu P.F. and the MDC headed by Ncube.

Strange that Masunda does not appreciate the difference between a party and an individual.

  6. If you read the herald, you can compare the two stories and see who is lying, shame to you moses matenga

  7. rather than buying into the illusion that the MDC tea clubs offer a choice.people should organise themselves into politically independent pressure groups pressing for change.i think more can be archieved this way.

  8. Moses Matenga l used to like your reporting but of late you are beginning to show some gross bias in your reports.its clear that you support Biti and the renewal team and that’s not a problem, it only becomes a problem when people begin to see it.its not a secret that you were paid by the renewal team for imbalanced reporting.

  9. This is nonsensical! Since when did three people make a mob? Tsvangison is no longer a magnet.

  10. Ini ndoda MORGIZA kusvika madhongi amera nyanga. maDiplomats handiwo POVO. POVO tisu tinovhota.

  11. the Biti group seems overly excited with all the attention they are getting and all the monetary benefits that go with it ,but will it last?this zanu pf sponsored project will come down crumbling like a deck of cards sooner than later.Muzorewa did it but where did it lead him.

  12. MBiti the mega-idiot! He shot himself in the balls. he must enjoy this- his last term in parliament , for he will never ever be votted into parliament again. The pple from his Harare East are up in arams against him! They want his head on a silver platter! I must hoever congratulate him- for ruining and weakening the opposition to its very core! Because as Mwanawevhu, I naturally do not like anyone who takes sides with our former colonisers.

  13. What matters is the grass roots! That’s were the game is played! Common sense and judgement is freely given to them that keep things simple.

  14. Why do you say Morgan is embattled when he can feel any stadium without forcing people to attend his rally . You must improve in common sense young man otherwise you are about to spoil the good reputation of this news paper by doing childish reporting.

  15. Funny how common sense eludes so many seemingly intelligent and wise man. What matters is the grass roots, that’s where the game of politics is played.

But Biti l will share with you an open secret, people are baying for your blood l do not know how you will roll out, you are a marked man in ordinary people’s eyes

  16. Simba Makoni is a level headed man and a unifier, his actions by interacting with members of both factions and the business community show that he is the point man. I’m personally happy that he has pointed it out that there can not be a grand coalition without involving Tsvangirai. He recognises that MT has more peoples’ support than anyone else. I respect him.

  17. Like it or not Morgan Richard Tsvangirai is the President of MDC. Under free and fair vote Tsvangirai will win. Some of these confused guys like Biti and Mangoma they are just trying their luck. People thought that if one is a Professor or is a degreed someone it is automatic that he will win the election because of his education background. It was proven that the most educated people are poor leaders. The good example is Mutambara and Welshman Ncube. Where are they now? I believe that some people are born leaders. The MDC T has a constitution and every year they hold a Congress. Biti and Mangoma as educated people they should have waited for the Congress to decide. I imagine this kind of thinking can they lead a country displaying coward behavior like this.

  18. Whatever Biti stands for, noble or otherwise, the “sell-out” tag on him in the eyes of majority of MDC supporters will work against him.

  19. Kanga Fry, don’t hide behind a finger my brother. It is well known that MT with his MDC-T party draw thousands of supporters in
Zimbabwe. Sure, given the green light, Zimbabwe grounds will be full to capacity with MDC-T supporters whether we like it or not.
Even the ruling party knows with fright that Tsvangirai & his team attract thousands of supporters where ever they go.
It is too early for BITI & company to organize any meaningful rally anywhere in Zimbabwe..
Honestly, the people are yet to come to terms with BITI & MANGOMA’s suspect behavior. Breaking away from the main opposition party at the peek of the struggle does not speak well for democracy. To make matters worse, BITI & company seem to have done
a clandestine job. This looks more like a money project to derail the people’s struggle. Being power hungry is NOT being democratic!!

  20. It is only shallow minded pple who can in broad day light dream that Tendai biti can be a leader of the nation. I would advise mr biti to direct his energy and good vocabulary in writing novels and short stories becoz in the political arena he can not stand a second against morgan. he is busy courting the so called diplomats who are irrelevent in the politics of Zimbabwe coz they don’t vote whilist Morgan is cementing with the grassroots. Becoz of the level arrogance, immaturity and shallow mindedness displayed by biti I now doubt him as a lawyer. Infact he should revist the school of law.

  21. What if Biti and his team are right in asking Morgan to go. I think he has made more mistake than any opposition leader in this region, what more can he do if he is in office as President and no one can dare challenge any of his mistaken opinions. hameno.

    • Iwe, everyone makes mistakes, including you. Who are you to decide how many times a person should err? With his mistakes (Morgan) people still love him! You can shut up and have a cup of tea.!!

  22. Biti’s closeness with Gono seems to be ön the walls now.All his actions ever-since it was exposed that he had strong links with the out going Governor, he had since become big-headed!What of this succession thing with Gono & what will be MBiti’s position, wotoshaya kuti zvirikufamba sei? Food For Thought ma Zimbo….

  23. soyanai nemabhunu muite zvinhu zvenyu, take them as business partners not political partners ,they use you ,whats next, they dump you.Bob and Tsvangirai are my witnesses. Tsvangirai the once loved chap of the west has now turned to be their enermy .the same whites are now sponsoring Biti to blackmail tsvangirai.

  24. have you ever noted kuti Simba anodiwa ne a few educated guys, kunyanya muma newspaper a Ncube, revisit Simba’s budget when he was minister and see his true colours, most of these self proclaimed highly educated politicians if given a chance there are most likely going to fall in the same trench of not Consulting with the people, which is our number one problem after corruption, corruption is because of scarcity, leaders like amai mujuru in a unity government with morgan Zim can be a better place.which i think is the most ideal coalition for the purposes of restoring this country peacefully.lets pray for Zimbabwe our challenges more spiritual than anything else.

  25. Thus great and its normal, nothing is miraculous on the meeting of these leaders. it is a fact to remember that they are all Zimbabweans. Its only that some people thought that Tsvangirai is now treating the rebels as enemies that is not it they remain brothers. Furthermore the fact that Biti met and discuss with more Diplomats THAT chikara che ZANU Tsvangirai is not an issue because those foreigners do not vote, personally i will be worried if Tindo gathered a crowd of povo from Zimbabwe who are ZIMBABWEANS than SAVE in all the ten Provinces of the country and this will be a miracle in zimbabwe. NA SAVE TAKANAKA VANOENDA NGAVAENDE VANOUYA VACHIUYA /….. VERY CLEAR….CHIRINDA MUGARIREWACHO.

  26. Even if a thousand people say a monkey is a baboon, it never changes to be one. Morgan Tsvangirai has made a great contribution to this country without a doubt but it is time he passed the batton. Even great statesmen like Mandela retired at some point. His contribution has not been withouth blemish and flawz, it is time he and others entrust the mandate he was then trusted with to another Zimbabwean. Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely…. We need a renewed MDC

  27. When a branch is producing good fruit, it doesn’t mean it is the tree. Beware Biti, you were a good branch among many on the MDC-T tree, but when you get prunned, you become nothing, even if we plant you, you die a natural death, but the main tree becomes even stronger.
This happened in 2005, when Ncube, Chimanikire, Job Sikhala, Gasela, we Sunningdale uyu hanzi Chaibva, then national chairman and company thought they were bigger than the tree, prunned themselves and died. Come 2008, they won a few seats due to confusion on the party log chete, and that was the end of them.
In fact it started with that dread man wekuHighfields ainzi ani zviya….hameno iyeye. After Ncube (Sec Gen) comes Biti (another Sec Gen) together with Mangoma, Mudzuri (Iye Mudzuri akabvira kare uyu, ndaimbomudifenda but is nyokasis), ana Madzore vafana ava (Glen View Hakuchina Comrade), ana Matienga, Ian Kay, Mangoma (Useless).
You see, the story repeats itself, as for Biti, your going is less effective than Ncube’s going. So will continue to prune the tree, and it grows much bigger.
Tell you what, if you do grafting the grafted branch becomes part of the tree, what am I saying, Job Sikhala is back, if he contests St Mary’s he is back in Parliament, hapana kana mubvunzo.
So bit, go well we will soldier on much stronger.
Chamisa you are the next Sec Gen, if you go, again we will get going, MDC is bigger than any institution deserters will create

  28. Big up Save, vaudzei kuti tosangana 2018 ndopavachaona kuti muri vahombe.ndimi moga mokwanisa kuzadza mastadium pasina kutyisa nekumanikidza vanhu.zvese izvo uko bwa,,,,,,

  29. If you read Zimbabwe newspaper headlines and stories you will never come up with the truth. e.g
    Grand Coalition taking shape
    Grand coalition project crumpling
    Grand coalition will collapse
    Steps ahead for Coalition
The headlines depends with which newspaper not with which is the correct story.

  30. this was an occasion of marvel for ‘ol masunda up until a flood of recently made homeless streetkids previously dirtyin’ around harvesthouse broke into the scene to steal the limelight by pouring corked bottled biti all over the place bucknakedly demanding crumbs watafiasco and red flag pointer to whats happening half south sudan where similarly bighat headed communication was created for cheer purpose of yankee stadium entertainment whatashame.

these are diplomats you are dealing with boys quite foreign and aloof to the scatterlings of africa handle with care to avoid another half s alms race here. unity unity is the only answer !!

  31. Those diplomats used the occasion to fathom the state of antagonism for their monthly updates. And like the circus that MDC has become, they went to show exactly that. Makavudzwa kare kuti ino nyika ndeye mhondoro mukaita nharo.

  32. I always wonder why such educated people like biti can not read the writing on the wall ? Ncube with his side kick Puli or is it prisilla they demonised Morgan day and night until they were thoroughly clobbered and thrown to the dust bin . So biti you know very well that you are out of the equation but you still clinging on to your toy gun do you think Morgan is scared of that angazi madoda sohlana 2018 election day.

    • Diibulaanyika says in his post that he wonders why educated people dont see the writing on the wall. I think that he is getting it all wrong. In other words, “learn from Ncube and dont leave the Tsvangirai because you will lose”. It is not about winning elections. It is about your conscience and the values that one stands for. Whether we want to admit it or not, Tsvangirai is in a much weaker (not stronger) position today because Biti and group left. You cant be stronger by losing your key leutenants every so often. Most people agree that if Welshman Ncube, Gibson Sibanda, Paul Themba Nyathi, Renson Gaselaand company hadn’t left in 2005, MDC would be in power today. In the last election MDCT got 34% of the vote. They will get even less now that another faction has branched off. So it is not whether Biti will win elections. Rather, it is whether Tsangirai himself and the MDCT will ever win anything, given their tendency to self-destruct.

  33. What puzzles me is the reporter didn’t report much about the event where former mayor Masunda was being recognised for a sterling job during his tenure…instead he deliberately decided to focused on the two factions. Journalists are becoming part of the problem. Lets learn to hail positive developments rather than focus on negative issue all the time

  34. When will Zimbabwe see that Makoni is the only genuine option for the country. We all started as ZANU so wha’s the problem?

  35. Diibulaanyika says in his post that he wonders why educated people dont see the writing on the wall. I think that he is getting it all wrong. 36. Its Tsvangirai all the way no matter how much they try to demonise him. The more they blackmail him the more we will wholeheartedly and passionatly support him.

  37. It is undemocratic and unfare for us Zimbabweans to have a leader chosen for us by Donners and Diplomats. Why do they dispise our choice just because they have money? They are thinking of diamonds and not our freedom of choice.
