THE consumer basket for a family of six has marginally decreased by 0,32% to $559,42 due to minimal decline of prices of goods in the basket in April, consumer watchdog Consumer Council of Zimbabwe (CCZ)has said.

CCZ in a statement yesterday said from the March 2014 figures, prices of other commodities which include fuel and bread remained unchanged. CCZ statistics showed that the food basket decreased by 0,96% to $151,81 by March 2014 to $151,35 by the end of April.

This was on the back of price decrease in detergents.

During the month under review, the cost of soaps and detergents decreased by 36 cents from $9,43 to $9,07 due to promotions carried out by many retail outlets.

The survey is conducted twice during the first and last weeks of every month.

The total cost of the food basket and the price of each commodity are arrived at by averaging prices gathered from retail outlets throughout the country.

The cost of 500 grammes of margarine went down by $1,31 from $2,45 to $1,14, while the price of cabbage (1kg) decreased by 15 cents from 75 cents to 60 cents.

Tomatoes (1kg) decreased by 10 cents from 90 cents to 80 cents, a 2kg pacekt of sugar decreased by 10 cents from $1,85 to $1,75, a 2kg packet of rice decreased by 6 cents from $1,65 to $1,59, a 500g packet of washing powder decreased by 8 cents from 89 cents to 81 cents and laundry bar decreased by 4 cents from $1 to 96 cents.

Meanwhile, the price of a 20kg bag of mealie meal increased by 80 cents from $12,30 to $13,10, onions (1kg) increased by 55 cents from $1,05 to $1,60, beef (1kg) increased by 50 cents from $3,90 to $4,40, a 750ml bottle of cooking oil increased by 4 cents from $1,61 to $1,65, a 250 grammes pack of tea leaves and bath soap increased by 2 cents and 1 cent respectively to settle from $1,85 to $1,87 and 69 cents to 70 cents respectively.

Official statistics showed that year-on-year inflation for the month of April gained by 0,65% to -0, 26% on the March 2014 rate of -0,91%. While the year-on-year food and non-alcoholic beverages inflation, prone to transitory shocks, stood at -3, 73%, non-food inflation rate was 1, 50%.

In 2013, inflation closed the year below 5% as projected by Treasury.
