LOCAL Government permanent secretary Killian Mpingo has died. Mpingo (53) died on Thursday night at a local hospital after being ill for some time.

Permanent secretary in the Ministry of Information George Charamba confirmed the death.
“It’s sad that Mpingo passed away on Thursday and funeral arrangements are going on. Get in touch with Erica Jones for further details,” Charamba said.
Jones is a senior officer in the Local Government ministry.
Mpingo has been a career bureaucrat and at the time of his death was working with local authorities to regularise buildings and developments in towns.
The ministry last week lost in court its bid to have illegally-developed houses in Chitungwiza and Seke demolished by the local authorities.
Chitungwiza residents mounted a strong legal challenge that the municipality should not be allowed to demolish their homes without providing alternative accommodation or having a valid court order.

Mpingo was also in the news earlier this year when Parliament threatened to charge him with contempt for failing to attend oral hearings on issues in his ministry.
He enraged the Senate Thematic Committee on Peace and Security then when he sent Civil Protection Unit director Madzudzo Pawadyira to stand in for him.
Committee chairman Senator Damien Mumvuri dismissed Pawadyira, telling him that they only wanted an accounting officer before them.
