THE country's biggest schools football tournament, the Copa Coca-Cola tournament was launched at Chemhanza High School in Mashonaland East Province on Friday morning.

Coca Cola last year poured in $250 000 for the tournament but Copa Coca-Cola senior Franchise brand manager Takunda Jinda, without giving the exact figures, said they have increased the sponsorship by a significant amount.

The tournament kicked off at the cluster level yesterday and the winners progressing to the zonal, then the district level and to the provincial finals which will culminate in to the national finals that would be held at Churchill High School in Harare on the weekend of July 18-20.

The draw for this year’s finals for both the boys under 16 and the girls under 17 girls was made with boys defending champions Chemhanza pooled in group A where they will face winners from Masvingo and Mash Central Province.

Girls defending champions Chidyamakono was pooled in group C with Midlands and Mat North.

Yesterday’s event was graced by sports personalities including Mighty Warriors coach Rosemary Mugadza, former Warriors striker Norman Maroto, Dynamos goalkeeper Artwell Mukandi and Caps United striker Leonard Fiyado. The event was also used as a send-off ceremony for two Chemhanza soccer stars Tatenda Munditi and Tatenda Tumba who are traveling to Brazil next Sunday courtesy of Coca-Cola for a six day camp.

The camp include watching the world cup opening match.

Fiyado and Mukandi also travelled to Brasilia in 2008 under the same programme.

Boys Under 16 Group A: Chemhanza (defending champs), Masvingo, Mash Central. Group B:Harare, Bulawayo, Midlands . Group C:mat east, Mat North, Manicaland. Group D: Churchill (hosts), mash west, Mat North.

Girls Under 17 Group A: Roosevelt (hosts), mat south, Mash Central. Group B: Mash East, Bulawayo, Masvingo. Group C: Midlands, Chidyamakono (defending champs), Mat North. Group D: Harare, Manicaland, Mash West.
