WARRIORS and Highlanders midfielder Peter “Rio” Moyo has landed a contract with a South African Premiership side and will wave good bye

WARRIORS and Highlanders midfielder Peter “Rio” Moyo has landed a contract with a South African Premiership side and will wave good bye to the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League in June, dealing a huge blow to Highlanders’ championship challenge.

Moyo, who lasted just 26 minutes in their 3-1 victory over Buffaloes at the weekend after picking up an injury, sat out the Warriors first training session before he was deemed unfit to play on Sunday after an assessment by team doctor Nick Munyonga.

However, NewsDay Sport can reveal that Moyo has been offered a contract with a club in South Africa which he has already signed. He is due to leave for South Africa at the end of June in time for the pre-season preparations.

Earlier this year, our sister paper Southern Eye reported after the Chan tournament in South Africa that Rio had attracted attention following his impressive display.

After learning that he has been ruled out of the Warriors clash against Tanzania, Moyo took the opportunity to run around, sorting out his work permit this week with the assistance of team doctor Munyonga.

While it could not be immediately established which club had signed him, we understand he is heading to either Mpumalanga Black Aces or Chippa United.

Although both Highlanders chairman Peter Dube and his agent Amin Soma Phiri were not at liberty to disclose finer details, Phiri confirmed the player would be leaving for South Africa in June.

“Moyo is definitely leaving for South Africa at the end of June. I am yet to establish the actual dates and I can’t disclose the team now because I am still to finalise with Highlanders,” said Phiri.

The Highlanders midfielder displayed a brilliant show at the Chan tournament against Burkina Faso which the Warriors won 1-0.

He was named the man-of-the-match after that game having been overlooked in the opening two matches against Morocco and Uganda.

Moyo becomes the third player to leave Highlanders this season after Kuda Mahachi who is on loan having been signed by South African Premiership side Mamelodi Sundowns. Milton Ncube has also been snapped up by another South African Premiership side Cape Town Ajax.

In recent games, Bosso coach Kelvin Kaindu has been trying to plug the upcoming gaps with Charles Sibanda fitting in well in Mahachi’s position against Buffaloes while Welcome Ndiweni is a perfect fit in Rio’s place.

Valentine Ndaba could also grab the opportunity to get a first team jersey when Ncube departs.
