The country’s leading junior golfer, Krog cemented his status on the continent after claiming a bronze medal at Gaborone Golf Club on Botswana on Thursday.

In fact, Krog could have won a silver medal as he was tied for second position with South Africa’s Hendrik Johannes du Plessis with a gross of after 54 holes of strokeplay.

The 17-year-old St Georges College student, who carded rounds of 71, 74 and 73, eventually settled for a bronze medal after coming short during a playoff as du Plessis snatched the silver.

Another South African junior golfer Kyle James McClatchie won the gold medal with a gross of 212.

It was, however, still a remarkable achievement for the rising junior golfer, who finished five shots clear of fourth-placed Nigerian Tokunbo Pedro.

While Krog was shining in Botswana, another young Zimbabwean golfer Bekker was making waves at the US Kids Golf European Championships which ended at Gullane Golf Club in Scotland on Thursday.

The 11-year-old Chapman Golf Club rising star, proved why she is hotly tipped to become the first Zimbabwean female golf star on the world circuit with a solid display against some of the world’s finest juniors in her age group category at the prestigious competition.

Bekker went into the final round atop the leaderboard after rounds of 79 and 76 in the opening two rounds before a final round 90 saw her dropping to second position on a gross of 245.

She finished five shots behind Magdalena Cervinková from the Czech Republic, who eventually won the competition with a gross of 246.

Bekker is coached by veteran female coach Cathy Riley, while her father Ryan caddies for her in most of her competitions.

The young star has also won the admiration of top Sunshine Tour professional Ryan Cairns who recently tipped her for greater things in the future.
