$1 or bottle of beer for sex as prostitutes fall on hard times

Due to the economic challenges that the country is currently facing, prostitutes in Marondera have fallen on hard times.

Wadzanai Madhibha

The rise in prostitution in Marondera is due to a number of reasons, chief among them the influx of sex workers reportedly coming as far as Nyamapanda in search of better fortunes.

A survey conducted by NewsDay recently revealed that most of the prostitutes are not benefiting financially from the trade.

$1 is enough to buy sex in this farming town with some of the hookers even charging five rand.

The prostitutes who spoke to NewsDay said they slashed their prices to $1 for their services because competition is very stiff.

“Business is no longer brisk these days, I think most women have resorted to sex work as some girls even come from as far as Nyamapanda to try their luck,” said one sex worker identified as Beyonce in the trade.

“My sister, business is very low these days, it’s better to charge $1 for sex rather than go home empty-handed,” she added.

“I can’t negotiate further than a $1 especially with the locals who know that girls are cheap here,” said Serina.

Another sex worker said that on a good day one can take home $10, but sometimes one can go empty-handed especially mid month.

Some of the sex workers said that they had resorted to barter trade as a bottle of beer can buy sex.

“To source for clients you can go for a bottle of beer that is if you find one who is willing to buy beer, after drinking you can thank the man with sex.

“Its better to go to the bars and drink with prospective clients, especially mid month when most wallets are empty because you never know where the interactions may lead it may be a stepping stone to prospective clients,” one prostitute said.

Some of the prostitutes said it seems as if many people had joined the trade.

“Each day you see a new face roaming around the bars sourcing for clients and some men just come for a drink not for women and the few that come for women can not afford all the sex workers so because of that we will end up without business, hence forcing us to offer cheap services.”

  1. We need jobs for our young women, not having them resort to prostitution. In many developed countries, women end up working as prostitutes due to mental illness or having a drug addiction. For others, it’s poverty and a lack of education.

In developed countries, there are also high end call girls and escort services, where very beautiful and often educated young women are doing it strictly for the money, and it’s highly lucrative. There are also similar situations going on in Zimbabwe.

It seems in this situation these are relatively uneducated (they have no college or university education) young rural women who lack a proper upbringing and traditional family structure. Many are likely AIDS orphans or come from families with no fathers.

I think the fact that the nations income from natural resources such as diamonds etc. are not used to develope rural areas is also a contributing factor. Why aren’t there better schools, hospitals, training colleges, running water, electricity etc in the rural areas?

    2. Fidel Castro they don’t have the degrees for such work in UZ yet, I dont know about diplomas, perhaps in the Backstreet college or something. Okay seriously Fidel, we dont need such people, they are lazy and think that they can make money from watching the cieling only. They can sell something or get together and do something constructive for money. Cant say much, Idont have an answer. Perhaps I should have kept mymouth shut and let people wonder whether I am a fool than have opened it and removed all doubt!!

  3. No industries, no jobs, no colleges or VTCs in our Districts. What else can the GIRL CHILD do to survive. Most girls i’ve seen resorting to prostitution are those who have completed their O/A’ Levels and have nothing to do. Govt pliz, instead of buying luxury cars for our MPs, invest the millions of dollars into colleges, VTCs and other projects that will empower every girl/boy child in our Districts.

  4. Despite economic hardship in the country, turning to prostitution for survival is failure at a personal level. Trials & tribulations are part of life & God promised that if we seek him he will walk us through all fires

Becoz of our laws and policies, most foreign investors would rather keep their monies than invest in Zimbabwe. Sometimes the Chinese are good becoz they dont set up permanent structures knowing very well that anything could happen. Becoz of what happened previously, foreign investors are seeing it as a risk to set up businesses in Africa. Wars, changes of laws and policies as well as new governments emerging are some of the contributing factors. Companies and industries are closing down and those existing are surviving on a shoe string budget.

Lapsus pennae, wanted to say, changes TO the laws and policies.

    1. Why don’t you do this business in your country? Stop fleecing Zimbabweans please.

  11. These are results of a failed state. HIV and AIDS will continue to kill people in our society. After some of them completed their degrees, O level, A level etc they cannot find job now they resort to practice prostitution. If we look back before independence yes prostitution was there but not to this extent. Life hardships forced people to get into these dirt games. We are in situation were by we don’t know what the future shall be like. Smith never failed like this we are witnessing under Mugabe.

  12. If you ask the majority of these women they will tell you their marriages broke and they thought life was lucrative out there. Madzimai ari mudzimba please respect your marriages and dont let the gospel of women empowerment mislead you otherwise you will also end on the streets. Personally my ex wife is one of those in this business .Sad story though

  13. Why don’t they get busy in those farms that they got? All they need is to get busy in those farms if prostitution is not working because I am told that land is now in the hand of the rightful owners the Zimbo masses.
