This will be the first time that artistes will be touring the camp after only Alick Macheso had visited the camp as part of his humanitarian ambassadorial role with the Zimbabwe Red Cross Society.

Tuku’s manager Sam Mataure yesterday told NewsDay that they had seen it fit for Tuku to visit the camp and see for himself how the people are living.

“As Tuku Music, we found it very important for Ambassador Mtukudzi to visit the affected people and also see for himself how best as a musician and others they can chip in,” Mataure said.

Organisers of the tour Divine Assignments yesterday said the artistes would leave Harare on Wednesday morning and spend the day with the displaced villagers to get an appreciation of the situation.

He said the tour would be part of their plans to hold a fundraising show for the victims at the City Sports Centre in Harare on May 10.

“Various organisations have been to Chingwizi and others have made donations as a way of assisting the villagers, but among musicians it is Macheso alone who has been there,” said Lawrence Chinoperekwei, the programmes director for Divine Assignments.

“Artistes are the mirror of society and we feel it is important for them to make the tour so that when they participate in the event it will be in the context of the crisis.”

Chinoperekwei said as of yesterday Leonard Zhakata, Winky D and XQ has pledged participation while the rest would confirm today.

He said they intend to travel with a total of 30 artistes to Chingwizi.

Meanwhile, Mataure has promised fireworks at Tuku’s Greatest Hits Concert scheduled for tonight at the Harare International Conference Centre.

Mataure said the gig would be structured in such a way that the bulk of the artistes would feature on his set performing his tracks.

“Sekuru Gweshe will perform first followed by Tsvete before Tuku comes on stage to collaborate with artistes like Ammara Brown, Douglas Chimbetu, Tariro neGitare and Jean Masters,” Mataure said.

“After that, Tanga Wekwa Sando will then come on stage for a short while for Tuku to finish up the show.”
