Speaking to NewsDay on the sidelines of the highly-publicised Tuku’s Greatest Hits Concert held over the weekend at the Harare International Conference Centre, Tuku’s manager Sam Mataure said they would scout for lucky upstarts ahead of the UK tour.

“As Tuku Music, we are determined to provide exposure and promote our local talent abroad. The Greatest Hits Concert was our first show ahead of a series of shows that we are going to conduct, searching for artistes that are going to accompany us for our UK show,” Mataure said, adding that they wanted eight artistes.

Mataure applauded all the partners who made the concert a success despite the low turnout and said their fans should expect more shows.

Tuku’s former sidekick Picky Kasamba joined Tuku on stage as they took fans down memory lane with yesteryear hits.

The playlist of songs that were played at the concert were chosen by the fans over the radio and online platform.

Sekuru Gweshe, who was the opening act, performed in an “empty” venue before leaving the stage for afro-fusion group Tsvete, nurtured at Pakare Paye Arts Centre. The group did not disappoint.

After Tsvete, Tuku took to the stage, collaborating with young artistes including Gary Tight, Ammara Brown, Douglas Chimbetu, guitarist-cum-singer Tariro neGitare and Jean Masters.

All the youthful musicians performed Tuku’s tracks.

Upcoming dendera musician Chimbetu failed to perform to the crowd’s expectations resulting in him being booed during his performance.

The night belonged to Tight and Tariro neGitare who managed to woo the crowd courtesy of their top-drawer performances.

Tight’s enchanting performance accompanied by captivating dance routines left the crowd clamoring for more as he demonstrated why many believe he is a force to reckon with.

Tanga WekwaSando found it difficult to match the previous performers who had set great standards as fans could be seen moving in and out during his performance. Dancehall lovers who came for the show were left disappointed as chanter Guspy Warrior failed to turn up for the show.

The concert was organised by Tuku Music in partnership with ZiFM Stereo, Impala Car Rental and Zimbo Jam.

Meanwhile, Tuku will next month make his debut appearance at a South African festival dubbed Drum Beat Concert slated for Soweto on May 10.

At the festival Tuku will share stage with musician Ringo Madlingoz, Indwe, Nancy G, The Jaziel Brothers, The Soil, Zeus, Tumi and Zakes Bantwini among others. The annual festival is presented by Toyota in association with Hilltop Live Productions, Drum Magazine, Kaya FM and Mzansi Magic.
