He said the students, under the umbrella of the Zimbabwe Congress of Students Union, have collected donations of clothing, foodstuffs, stationery, cash, and blankets.

Nzira said the students have now extended their “begging bowls” to the public and recently held a cleanup campaign in the central business district.

He said more than six bales of clothes were collected during the cleanup campaign while $800 in cash was raised.

Harare Metropolitan Provincial Affairs minister Miriam Chikukwa said the initiative by the students would go a long way in alleviating the problems faced by the over

3 000 Tokwe-Mukorsi victims temporarily sheltered at Chingwizi camp in Nuanetsi.

“This goes a long way to show us as a government that with such bright and progressive minds behind us, the future of our country is indeed in safe hands,” she said.

“Instead of them going out on the streets to protest they have shown maturity and patriotism in going out for a good cause.”

One of the students Kenita Chimuka said she joined the cause to help fellow students.

“I decided to be part of the cleaning team because I wanted to assist the child victims with food, clothing and stationary,” she said.

Harare Polytechnic acting principal Engineer Tafadzwa Mudondo said the institution was fully behind the initiative.

He said once all the formalities have been undertaken the students will proceed to Masvingo and hand over their donations.

A Tokwe-Mukorsi Trust Fund has also been opened under the name Harare polytechnic CBZ Sapphire branch account numbers 024205956000 and 02420595600034.
