Confirming her death, Mukonoweshuro’s eldest daughter Sara Moyo said she had recently been diagnosed with cancer and unfortunately she succumbed to the illness on Sunday.

Moyo said burial arrangements were still to be finalised as they were waiting for some of the deceased’s children based in the United Kingdom and the United States.

Mukonoweshuro is one of Zimbabwe’s earliest authors with books like Ndakakutadzirei published in 1979.

Her other books, Akafuratidzwa Mwoyo (1983) and Ndakagara Ndazviona (1990), were used as set books for “O” Level exams.

Meanwhile, authors have described the death of Mukonoweshuro as a big loss to the country.

Petina Gappah, who wrote the award winning An Elegy for Easterly, said: “Sharai was a hugely compassionate writer whose social realistic novels tackled themes as varied as domestic strife, crime, the triumph of love over evil, and hope over fate.”

“She gave dignity to women’s stories, particularly the women in the rural settings of her wonderful novels. She will be sorely missed, but her books will console us in her absence.”

Mapenzi author Ignatius Mabasa described Mukonoweshuro as more than an author whose publications were rich in their portrayal of Shona culture.

Mukonosweshuro, who was now a pastor with the Zaoga church, is survived by her husband David, six children and 14 grandchildren.

Mourners are gathered at 280 North Way in Prospect, Harare.
