ZIMBABWE’S 34th edition of independence celebrations have gone elite, with this year’s independence musical gala scheduled for Borrowdale Race Course

ZIMBABWE’S 34th edition of independence celebrations have gone elite, with this year’s independence musical gala scheduled for Borrowdale Race Course in Harare.

By Everson Mushava Chief Reporter The Independence Gala has unanimously become the beacon of celebrating the country’s carnival and has always been associated with the masses that are generally concentrated in the high density suburbs and rural areas.

But today, one of Harare’s leafy suburb of Borrowdale will be host to the event.

Interestingly, musician Alick Macheso’s galloping dance that was crafted mimicking a horse will find itself deep in the roots of its origins. One of the organisers of the gig, Marian Kunonga, told reporters yesterday that the celebrations have been moved to Borrowdale to show that Zimbabwe was there for everyone.

“Zimbabwe belongs to all of us,” Kunonga said yesterday.

“This year’s edition has been named Jive Zimbabwe 34 because we want people to enjoy. We have a fantastic selection of music genres to appeal to everyone.”

Many musicians will, including the popular dancehall musicians, square up to thrill the music loving fans, but it is Macheso’s Borrowdale dance that is likely to light up the Borrowdale Race Course.

That aside, it will be Macheso and his emblemic Borrowdale dance that is likely to be one of the climaxes of the affair.

Each time Macheso dances, the Orchestra Mberikwazvo frontman’s fans have been left clamouring for more as he fuses the Borrowdale dance with the popular zora butter dance.

It was Macheso’s fascinating dances and unique guitar skills that mesmerised President Robert Mugabe at the Defence Forces Day celebrations in 2012 when he summoned him to the high table to greet him.

Sulumani Chimbetu, Sebastian Magacha, Leonard Zhakata, Charles Charamba and Edith Weutonga, among many other musicians will also perform at this year’s celebrations.
