Chabvonga, who used to assist in carrying equipment for Chimurenga legend Thomas Mapfumo’s band so that he could watch the shows for free, said he was inspired by his music hero to start his own band.

Popularly known as Biggie, Chabvonga told NewsDay on the sidelines of his weekend show at Lion King Restaurant in Harare:

“I have no hard feelings over what I learnt from several sections of the media that Generator was the founder of Ngorimba Fusion, but I just want to make it clear to promoters that I am the founder of the band contrary to Generator’s claims.

“Generator is our backing vocalist who is talented and together with other gifted individuals will shake the music industry as we are destined for greater heights.”

Generator, who made her name on the local showbiz scene through her exceptional dancing skills, is not a stranger to controversy after she was fired twice from Jah Prayzah’s Third Generation Band over reports of misconduct.

Biggie said the name Ngorima Fusion was derived from the band’s use of traditional instruments like ngoma and marimba and Mapfumo’s departure from the local form.

“When Mapfumo left the country, I felt it was time I ventured into the music industry to keep our traditional music alive,” he said.

Meanwhile, the band had a good show in front of a sizeable crowd at Lion King over the weekend.

They wowed audience with their well-choreographed dance routines proving to be a force to reckon with in showbiz.

They belted songs like Tinovatenda Masoja, Musha Waparara, Maidei and Mombe Yehumai, among others.

The band has performed at several joints that include Joy Centre in Highfield and Moonlight Sports Bar in Mabvuku, among others, and tomorrow they will be at Calitoz Nite Club at Greencroft shopping Centre, Harare.
