CHAMPIONS Dynamos, now enjoying a cool breeze at the summit of the league table after dislodging old foes Highlanders at the weekend, face new boys Chapungu in a midweek Castle Lager Premiership football tie at Ascot Stadium, hoping to maintain their lead.

Chapungu are on 10th position on the table with five points from four matches and will be hoping to collect maximum points at home. Dynamos defeated Harare City 3-1 at the National Sports Stadium on Sunday to shoot to the summit.

New boy Anesu Gondo was the destroyer-in-chief after scoring a memorable brace before substitute Walter Mukanga struck the insurance goal.

The victory was Dynamos’ first at home this season and crucially got a goal harvest which coach Kalisto Pasuwa has been crying out for as his forward line has been struggling to put the ball in the back of the nets. The Dynamos gaffer was pleased with Gondo’s brace and believes he has the potential to continue banging them in.

“We have been crying out for goals and am happy we got the goals today [on Sunday]. We are happy with Gondo’s two goals. He is showing a lot of potential, but I am worried about the way we are conceding goals. We are always conceding at the restart and we need to avoid that,” Pasuwa said.

This was Harare City’s fourth defeat of the campaign in four matches, a result that has added more pressure on coach Bigboy Mawiwi to start turning around the team as his men prepare for a showdown against army side Buffaloes at Rufaro Stadium tomorrow.

Mawiwi, whose side had fought back to draw 1-1 through a volleyed effort by skipper Nathan Ziwini, played with conviction and at times dominated play, but a breakdown of communication between two centre backs Arnold Chivheya and Crispen Dickson allowed Gondo to force his way through before letting fly a shot to complete his double.

Mawiwi said yesterday the match against Buffaloes was a must-win tie. “We need to correct the mistakes we made against Dynamos. We conceded silly goals and the defence has to improve on that. Otherwise there are a lot of positives from the match against Dynamos. Wednesday’s match is a must-win for us,” Mawiwi said.

Buffaloes are on 13th position with five points from four matches and will be seeking to take advantage of Harare City’s poor form.

Elsewhere, Highlanders, who drew 1-1 against Hwange in a top-of-the-table clash, have a tricky fixture against Chicken Inn at Barbourfields Stadium on Thursday, with Harare giants Caps United, who lost 1-2 to FC Platinum on Saturday, hosting Triangle at the National Sports Stadium and hoping to recover from that reverse.
