Chapungu enjoying Premiership return

CHAPUNGU head coach John Nyikadzino is delighted by his team’s fair start to the season as the Premier Soccer League returnees continue to hold their own against their more experienced opponents.

The Air Force side, currently in seventh position on the log standings, is yet to lose a match in three outings this season.

After drawing giants Highlanders to a goalless draw in their first match of the season Chapungu followed with a 1-0 win over fellow service man Black Rhinos 1-0 before holding How Mine 2-2 on Sunday. Nyikadzino attributed the promising start by his charges to the support he is getting from all relevant authorities at the club.

“The boys are playing very well and I am delighted by their response to the demands of Premiership football so far.

“We prepared for life in the Premiership adequately and it’s encouraging that the boys are implementing what we are doing at training into the game situations,” said Nyikadzino.

“I am also grateful of the support we are receiving from our sponsors, players are motivated from the way they are being remunerated and if they are kept motivated they will do to the best of their abilities in the field of play.

“There are obviously areas that need to be improved and we will address those areas at training but generally the start is encouraging,” he said.

The Gweru side seemed doomed from the onset after the fixtures released by PSL paired them against more fancied opponents in the opening fixtures.

Their next assignment will be a visit to Bantu Rovers before they welcome Dynamos in week five at their home ground Ascot stadium.
