A HEATED dispute over a stinking dead puppy nearly turned fatal when a 43-year-old Waterfalls man allegedly struck and seriously injured his neighbour with an axe and iron bar accusing him of dumping the carcass in his blair toilet.

Davison Songani of Hopley Zone 1 in Waterfalls, Harare, was not asked to plead when he appeared before regional magistrate Noel Mupeiwa on a charge of attempted murder of Givemore Mziofa in January this year.

The trial, however, was deferred after Songani made an application for a postponement arguing he was unfit to stand trial due to general body pain and swollen feet.

According to State papers, the incident that nearly cost Mziofa’s life occurred on January 18.

The State alleges, on the day in question, Mziofa was away when Songani picked up his dead puppy and dumped it in Mziofa’s toilet.

It is further alleged that upon Mziofa’s return from his errands, he was welcomed by a stench.

On making enquiries, he was advised it emanated from a dead puppy dumped in his toilet.

The court heard that Mziofa confronted Songani and requested him to remove the smelling dead puppy from the toilet.

The State alleged, during the ensuing mêlée, Songani grabbed an iron bar and axe before using them to strike Mziofa several times on the head, face and legs.
