Govt delays pension payment

GOVERNMENT yesterday moved this month’s pension pay date from April 25 to April 30.

GOVERNMENT yesterday moved this month’s pension pay date from April 25 to April 30. The Civil Service Commission (CSC) said the move had been necessitated by the need to cover the adjusted pension payments as well as backpay.

“Civil Service Commission advises that the Ministry of Finance (Treasury) has moved the pension pay date from the 25th of April to the 30th of April 2014,” CSC acting secretary Clifford Matorera said in a statement yesterday.

The cash-strapped government has for the past two months delayed paying its workers, in a move civil servants have described as “unacceptable”.

CSC secretary Pretty Sunguro last week said all civil servants who were supposed to get paid on Tuesday would now access their April salaries today.

She attributed the delay to last week’s holidays.

“The Finance ministry has attributed the change in pay dates to the upcoming Independence and Easter holidays, which will affect the transmission of funds within the banking sector,” Sunguro said.
