The three — Zacharea Mlambo (36), Arnold Munyaradzi Mapani (40) and Stephen Mapa (34) — were all remanded in custody to May 6.

They were advised to apply for bail at the High Court.

Charges against the three are that on April 3 this year at around 9pm, they hatched a plan to rob Mutare businessman Albert Kuwaza.

The three were in the company of an accomplice, Luckmore Matambanadzo, who had since appeared separately before a Mutare magistrate.

It is the State’s cases that the accused, who were armed with an unknown type of rifle, went to Kuwaza’s house in the upmarket suburb of Murambi.

Once at the house, they scaled down a precast wall to gain entry and while inside, they manhandled a night watchman whom they tied with a scarf.

Mapani was left guarding the night watchman as the others proceeded into the house.

The court heard that they forced open the door triggering the alarm mounted in the house, prompting the reaction crew to react swiftly.

On realising that their bid had been foiled, the accused fired two gunshots towards the security firm reaction crew before vanishing into the dark.

However, police managed to track down the suspects, leading to their arrest.

According to the State, the accused made some indications on how they had tried to rob Kuwaza and a Nokia cellphone they had confiscated from the night watchman was also recovered from them.
