TWO Honde Valley men were yesterday arraigned before Mutare magistrate Sekai Chiundura facing charges of murdering a fellow patron at a local bar following a misunderstanding last weekend.

The two, Bongani Savanhu (20) and Machera Maneto (28), were yesterday not asked to plead to murder charges as defined in section 47 (1)(b) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act Chapter 9.23. They were remanded in custody to April 30 and were advised to apply for bail at the High Court.

Charges against the two are that on April 11 this year, the pair was drinking beer at Katiyo Bar at Katiyo Estate in Honde Valley when the now deceased, Lovemore Nyatsuro, who was visibly drunk, joined them.

The State alleges that a misunderstanding between Nyatsuro and Savanhu ensued. In a drunken stupor, Savanhu leaped towards the now deceased and grabbed him by the throat.

Nyatsuro tried to free himself, but he was grabbed from behind by Maneto and they all fell down.

As the scuffle continued, Maneto punched the now deceased three times on his face. The court heard that he further kicked Nyatsuro in the abdominal area. However, the accused were later restrained from continuing assaulting Nyatsuro by another reveller identified as John Chambe. But moments later, they mobbed him again and threw him to the ground where they attacked him.

After the attack, Nyatsuro was assisted to his feet by one Lloyd Chinyama who escorted him to his homestead.

Upon arrival, Nyatsuro started to complain of abdominal pains and died the following morning.

According to the State, the pair was seen assaulting Nyatsuro in the bar and a postmortem confirmed that force was applied to his abdomen.
