IMPI chairman Geoffrey Nyarota said the panel started the outreach programme in Marondera before moving on to Rusape yesterday.

“We started off in Marondera, but the meeting was not very well attended. We split into groups and some of our panelists followed the people in their homes,” Nyarota said. “After Marondera, we went to Rusape where there was a sizeable crowd which was very participatory.”

Nyarota added: “We recorded all that the people raised and we will listen to the recordings which will help us in coming up with a report.”

The outreach programmes involve public meetings, interviews and general discussions with media and information stakeholders and members of the public on various issues concerning the media.

The panel will today be in Mutare at Queens Hall before moving on to Chimanimani and Masvingo.

IMPI comprises of 28 members including several senior journalists and experts from other professions.

The inquiry was launched last year by the Ministry of Information, Media and Broadcasting Services to assess the state of the information and media industry in Zimbabwe.

It is set to promote and elevate the standards of media practice in Zimbabwe as well as looking into the challenges affecting media operations.
