The most outstanding player will from this year get $6 000, an increase of $1 000 from the last three years.

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) sponsors yesterday announced a new deal where they will inject $700 000 directly into the running of the league this year, up from $600 000 in the last three seasons.

While the league sponsorship has been increased by $100 000 for each of the next three years, this time advertising and administration costs are excluded from the $700 000, with more funds set to benefit clubs.

The Soccer Star of the Year award will benefit from the increase in financial backing with improved financial rewards for the winners.

The sponsors and the PSL are set to make changes to the selection process with team captains set to participate in the process.

Delta Beverages marketing director Max Karombo said they would look to revamp the process in line with international trends for the Soccer Star of the Year selection.

“We want to keep on improving, we will look at ways to make the selection better,” said Karombo. “We (Delta) are very proud of the Soccer Star of the Year award so we are always looking at ways to improve everything about it. We are looking at bringing in club captains to participate in the process.”

The prestigious award has in the last few years been a subject of intense debate over issues to do with bias. Coaches and journalists have been involved in the voting process.
