Sam and his friend Owen Chimhare died on the night of March 15 while driving to Norton.

His death threw the nation into mourning while it was doom for his father, Oliver, who still concedes besides investing in his talented son, he had lost a friend.

Tuku’s agony led him to at one time keep the wreckage of the Tata truck at Pakare Paye Arts Centre in Norton as a symbol that would remind him of his dear son.

But it appears to have caused more pain until he disposed it, but showed his emotions in his latest album Sarawoga with both the title track Sarawoga and another song Ronga Dondo.

A host of emerging artistes from Norton also lost out as Sam had devoted most of his time to mentoring them.

Among them were steadily rising Munya Mataruse who will on Sunday headline a gig dubbed “Tribute to our Mentor Sam Mtukudzi” at Pakare Paye.

Also performing at the event will be Donald Kanyuchi and Innocent Mupemba who were all mentored by Sam.

Mataruse yesterday said the show was to remember their mentor. “This is something that we have just organised as artistes who benefited from his mentorship despite what the family may be planning to do,” he said.

“I am sure there is something official and bigger when Mdara (Tuku) comes back towards month end.”

Tuku, who is currently on a tour, is rumoured to be planning dinner in memory of his son.

Although details are still sketchy, NewsDay understands the dinner will be held at family level after the superstar’s return from his tour.
