Incumbent town clerk Gilbert Mlilo reportedly earns $16 000 a month, almost double the pay of his Bulawayo counterpart despite managing a much smaller town. Mlilo is set to leave the municipality in May.

Sources privy to municipal operations told Southern Eye that the trio was  among scores of applicants vying for the lucrative post.

“The race is hotting up. We hear there are plans to have Gwanda  DA (Zizhou) to be the next town clerk,” the source said.

“There’s Priscilla Nkala and also Maphala Thuso who used to be in the housing department.”

Southern Eye could not obtain the current list of applicants. Some of the applicants were said to be non-Gwanda residents, which has not gone down well with locals.

Gwanda continues to lag behind in development despite it being the provincial capital of Matabeleland South.

Mlilo was initially  due to retire in May 2013, but his contract was extended by 12 months to May this year. The town clerk’s job has lucrative perks which include   responsibility, professional, retention, telephone, cellphone housing and car allowances.

The council seeks an individual with “a vision and pin-sharp administrative acumen to ensure the municipality keeps abreast of the changes and developments of the new era while ensuring the reputation of the municipality in terms of efficiency, transparency and accountability”.
