This follows the broadcasting online of a 22-minute video, taken by award winning senior parliamentary reporter Veneranda Langa, where MPs Willias Madzimure, Settlement Chikwinya and Joseph Chinotimba spoke strongly against graft in state institutions.

Speaking in parliament on Tuesday Kuwadzana MP Nelson Chamisa motioned for live radio and television coverage of the events of the August House.

Chikwinya said: “To show that there is great hunger for live coverage of Parliament, Alpha Media Holdings (AMH) took a 22 minute long video of Parliament while MPs were debating a motion on corruption and streamed it live on You Tube,” said Chikwinya.

AMH are publishers of NewsDay, The Standard, Southern Eye and The Zimbabwe Independent.

“The video which was copied and also circulated through Whatsapp (mobile instant messaging service) received more than 567 000 hits, and people struggled to access that video even through their phones because they were thirsty for information about Parliament,” said Chikwinya. “What this shows is that people want information about Parliament.”

Last year NewsDay won the prestigious Highway Africa Most Innovative Newsroom award in Grahamstown South Africa.

NewsDay, which has a prominent mobile and web presence and is credited as a leader in accelerating the digital first strategy in line with world trends, had been nominated under the Telkom-Highway Africa New Media Awards Innovative Newsroom Category.

AMH Online Editor John Mokwetsi said: “We are proud of the recognition we are getting and for our digital first strategy to be acknowledged in the parliament house cements the impact.”

“Langa’s understanding of the power of multimedia reflects on the newsroom uptake of modern journalism. We are happy to lead in amplifying the voices of our legislators.”
