Masiyiwa named under world’s 50 greatest leaders

Econet Wireless founder and chairman Strive Masiyiwa has been ranked among the top 50 greatest world leaders by CNN’s Fortune magazine.

CNN/Business reporter

In a list released last week, Masiyiwa is on number 35 out of 50’s world greatest leaders.  The Roman Catholic leader Pope Francis is leading the pack of the world’s greatest leaders which includes businessmen, actors and presidents, civic activists and sports persons.

In a citation CNN Fortune lauded Masiyiwa as a development opportunities advocate.
“Masiyiwa, who also sits on the Africa Progress Panel as well as the boards of Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa and the Rockefeller Foundation, is a persuasive advocate for development opportunities and the creation of strong government institutions,” Fortune said.

Said Rockefeller Foundation president Judith Rodin: “He is truly one of Africa’s most influential figures, with his good counsel sought by world leaders and CEOs,” adding that Masiyiwa is “a champion for the power of technology to improve the lives of millions”.

Fortune magazine said it limited its list to currently active leaders and it asked leadership experts and Fortune reporters to suggest candidates and then vetted the ideas with people in each industry.

The list includes Angelina Jolie, Angela Merkel, Christine Largade, Warren Buffett, Bill Clinton, Geoffrey Canada and Michael Bloomberg.

A prominent African is Juliana Rotich, a 36-year-old lady, who is the cofounder and executive director of Ushahidi.

  8. Gud going bro, you’re really representing Zim internationally, however “a rose shuld bloom where its planted” Econet is ripping us left, right and center back home. Now if it was Eubert Angel or Makandiwa in place of Pope Francis, well this platform would now have been blocked by comments like ‘papa’, major, my father, soldier, blah blah blah. Dzidzaiwo kune vagara nechitendero ichi vanhuwee.

    1. Kkkkkk i agree with you Kitsi, we Catholics are humbl like a donkey. Go our Pope go. Go Masiwa go. I wish Dr. Nyongolo Nkomo were alive to be a witness to this. I just wish. He did everything possible to make sure that Masiwa gets his licence and above all we are thankful to the Almighty Father in heaven.

  10. Masiwa ku state house pa 2018

    1. You cannot waste such a gift by suggesting he becomes a politician. This guy is a leader. He acts, does not speak. Definately not state house material. He is far better than that.

I know Strive very well, I can broker the deal, if need be.

    1. Sha unomurovesa. Save doesnt like this. Ask Mangoma.

    2. ……again guys Strive is contributing immensely without being a politician. This school of thought that for one to contribute positively they have to be politicians is so, so outdated. The new economy needs the Stives of this world. People who build people. He does not deserve to be a politician. He will be a misfit.

  18. Zimbabwe must seriously consider Masiiwa as our next president. Forget chematama and all the rest of them.

  19. An admirable man and an accolade and achievement well deserved! Well done Strive. I would bet that his achievements make those criminals in Zanu PF and it’s leader cringe with shame and disgust at themselves and their truly shameful and degenerative legacy! Oops! I forgot…they have no conscience or wit!

  20. Wisdom Chisiya

Congratulation brother Masiiwa. You are a great man. You are my inspiration. I salute you

  21. Pope Francis leads a denomination whose other leaders abuse children, and then embark on a concerted effort to conceal the crimes. So he is the greatest?

Of course Masiyiwa makes us proud.

  24. I have been always saying Mugabe s bad governance started more than 25 years ago , Strive Masiyiwa was harassed and denied operating license for more than 5 years just because he was not Zanu pf . He had everything in place Equipment and staff but only license was short for his econet to roll. Daniel Shumba former zanu pf masvingo province chairman failed to operate his Teleaccess despite the fact that he did not sweat to get a license. Daniel Shimba was granted operating license because he was zpf but he had nothing available for operations. If this country was run on putting national or people’s interest 1st we were gonna be a great country but haa its a day dream. Zpf always run this country on party politics . When they refused to grant Strive a license they never thot of people will get employment, government revenue increase, country development through technology. They never thot it was a black empowerment . Their idea of black economic empowerment is to take what someone worked for and the beneficiary must be their members or someone aligned to the them , zvino zvamakapa ana Daniel Shumba ma license pa chi zanu arikupi nhasi ne Teleaccess yake. 35. George Bachinche

There is a different definition of leader. I m bemused that an actress is considered a leader. Masiyiwa might be a very successful business man, but calling his a leader is somewhat too generous. He might be a leader to those he employs but I don’t seem his influence beyond that.

    1. Zimbabweans when will we ever get to appreciate, his someone whose worth to be a leader & has the leadership quality on him go through his life experience, visit his facebook page his someone who influences, motivates, teaches on how to make it in life,a very humble down to earth man,if he was a politician his one someone i would say his worthy to be a leader of this country..

  36. @George virtue of him leading such a huge company across borders makes him a great leader, he is influential, l can tell you with the power he has amased he has the potential to move the minds of millions by jus jis voice..now do you not think of him as a leader….hr certainly is goin far this young chap.

  37. Okay Strive Masiyiwa is doing quite well so what? Such reports do not serve any purpose to the long-suffering Zimbabweans under the yoke of ZanuPF oppression. We want reports on corruption, lack of service delivery, declining living standards, how extremely excruciating black rule has turned out to be, etc etc not how well Strive Masiyiwa is doing in S Africa. Bill Gates is also dong well in America so what? We want more reports on affairs which affect our lives and less on how the rich are getting richer elsewhere.

    1. So you want to hear news about corruption of which no action is taken & nothing you can do bout it when its revealed lets be happy of one another he has made it through sweat & not corruption/stealing from innocent people…

      1. @gamz – get lost idiot.

        1. Check yourself & mindset before you call me a idiot you’ll realise who the idiot is,lets be proud of one another the point is this guy has done well through his sweat, why would we want to read about corrupt people who are making riches from stealing from the innocent after that is exposed it just ends in the paper & no action is taken look at Obert Mpofu,Cashbert Dube,Chombo they are walking freely in the streets, which influence do they give you in your life that stealing from the poor is how you obtain wealth/looking at Strive Masiyiwa & find out how he made it so you can strive to make it too in life?..Wake up Musona

        2. @gamz – nonsense – fool. Knowing that Strive is prospering will not change your life one iota.

        3. Musona get lost. Dont you think it is about time we appreciated the efforts of our fellow son of the soil and stopped worrying about corruption and other things that we cant control. In any case corruption and Strive ‘s success are not related in any way.Strive I am so happy for you, indeed you are inspired to change our world

Everything done in GOD’s name prospers. Masiyiwa dedicates his work to the almighty. You would find out that yearly he donates monies to different church organisations, so being dedicated to God to that extend, why and how can he fail? Keep it up Strive. You have done nation proud.

  41. Well done Strive, you deserve this.May God bless you especially in your ventures of expanding his work and looking after the vulnerable members of Society,I just wish Zimbabwe had more God fearing leaders just like you.

  42. I wonder which party he belongs to, there is no better candidate.

If Zim can have more of Strives, the country will be on another planet out of this world But because of greediness and selfishness and lack of professionalism by most business people especially vedu vehukama, this has resulted in Zim losing its glitter economically, left, right and centre. Surely we seek, we find and with Strive we will strive, for success and excellence and professionalism. Go Strive GOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!! all the way.

  63. Masiiwa akaleader kupi kuti aende pa50?I mean the performance of Econet is there for everyone to appreciate it is a well run company but how many companies are as well run as Econet the world over and why are their executives not being awarded the same 50th place.

There is more to all this than meets the eye. The 50th place awarded to Masiiwa must be seen in the same way we saw the award of a Nobel Peace Prize to President Obama for good leadership at the start of his Presidency which gesture also surprised him. He then said he did not know what he had done to deserve the Prize but accepted it because he understood it as a gesture urging him to provide good leadership during his tenure at the helm of US politics. I hope Masiiwa will say the same in accepting the 50th place he has been given and I hope he knows where the benefactors want him or hope to see him exercise the leadership.

    1. are u a fool or wat?, first masiiwa is number 35 not 50 and secondly Masiyiwa doesn’t own econet only as your small mind think , he has vast empires in America and across africa

  69. Worship only God (not man) and He will reveal to you more about this world! Only then will you understand the dynamics of this world. Praise our God. “And I fell at his feet to worship him. But he said to me ‘See that you do not do that! I am your fellow servant, and of your brethren who have the testimony of Jesus. Worship God! For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy’.

Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True*, and in righteousness He judges and makes war. …………Now I saw heaven opened……….Then I saw an angel standing in the sun…………And I saw the beast, the kings of the earth, and their armies gathered together to make war against Him who sat on the horse and against His army. …………..” (Revelation 19: 10-21).
