The Mighty Warriors progressed to the second and final round of the African Women Championships (AWC) after beating Botswana in an event-filled first round second leg qualifier at Rufaro Stadium yesterday. A fan was seriously injured when one of the paratroopers providing half-time entertainment failed to land properly and clipped the head of the supporter who was seated at the Mbare end.

According to one of the paramedics who attended to the unfortunate supporter, the fan suffered injuries to his head.

“He was hit on the back of his head and landed on his forehead. He had two cuts on the head.

“He was conscious by the time he was taken to the hospital, but the problem with head injuries is you can look stable at that moment, but the situation can deteriorate. We are just hoping it will not worsen.”

The fan, believed to be in his late 20s was taken to West End hospital.

The restart of the second-half was delayed by more than 15 minutes as the paratroopers had not cleared the field.

Zifa is likely to be sanctioned because of the delay.

Match commissioner Palmira Fransisco from Mozambique said: “There are some things that did not go well in this match.

“The restart to the match was delayed and the smoke used by the paratroopers also affected the players.

“Some had to be rushed to the hospital. I will note all that in my report to Caf.”

Away from the half-time drama, the Mighty Warriors, who had a brilliant first half before slowing down things in the second stanza, raced to an early lead when Rutendo Makore fired home from close range on 8th minute before Merjury Nyaumwe put the game beyond the visiting side with a half-volley six minutes later.

A blunder by Zimbabwe goalkeeper Chido Dzingirai at the stroke of fulltime gifted Bame Ngenda a consolation for Botswana.

The Rosemary Mugadza-coached side will now meet Zambia in the second and final qualifying round with the winner booking a ticket to the ACW finals set for Namibia this October.

The Shepolopolo queens beat Tanzania 3-1 on aggregate.
