ZIMBABWE’S Cara Black and her playing partner Sania Mirza from India are through to the semi-finals of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells after an upset win over the second seeds and defending champions Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina.

The fifth seeded duo, who got together after the United States Open last season, played dominating tennis to upset the Russian duo 6-4, 6-1 in one hour and 11 minutes in the quarterfinal contest to move into the last four.

They will now meet Lucie Hradecka and Jie Zheng for a place in the final.

Black and Mirza have had a tough start to the new season following early losses in two of their last three tournaments.

In fact, he Indo-Zimbabwean pair, who were knocked in the first round of the Dubai Open Tennis Championships recently, were yet to make a semi-final appearance in all six tournaments they have took part in this year.

The duo will, however, have a chance to revive their faltering fortunes after reaching the semifinals at the popular Indian Wells tournament which is widely considered as an unofficial fifth Grand Slam of the year.
