KADOMA — Irate parents have threatened to withdraw their children from the council-run Cam and Motor Primary School in Kadoma in protest against the alleged embezzlement of $20 130 by the school bursar identified as Prisca Banda.

BY BLESSED MHLANGA STAFF REPORTER The alleged scam was unearthed last year following an audit exercise conducted by the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education.

School Development Committee chairperson Jairos Jake told NewsDay last week that some parents had stopped paying fees demanding that the headmaster be fired for sleeping on duty and allowing Banda to misuse the funds.

“Parents want to recover the stolen money and also see off the headmaster because the audit report accuses him of sleeping on the job while the bursar stole from the school,” Jake said.

“We have 1 700 pupils at the school and off these only 30% have paid the $25 fees for first term.”

Part of the audit report read: “Appropriate disciplinary action should be taken against the school headmaster Evans Sabe for failing to effectively supervise banking, resulting in a loss of $20 130 that the former bursar abused.”

The report alleges that Banda made several payments to fictitious suppliers and these payments were not supported by receipts or invoices.

It further claimed that the bursar had duplicate receipt books which she would use and then pocket the money instead of depositing it into the school account.

“The then bursar from July 25 to September 2011 was using two receipt books bearing same serial numbers . . . in most instances, she posted the lessor amounts to the cash book and convert the difference,” the report read.

Jake said the matter had since been reported to police, but parents were pushing for Sabe’s expulsion.

Mayor Muchineripi Chinyanganya said he had sent council management to investigate the matter.
