THE National Gallery of Zimbabwe (NGZ) will on April 24 open a design exhibition titled Zimbabwe in Design.

The exhibition aims to showcase creative work available on a platform of all the best architecture, jewellery, fashion, fabrics and graphics in one place.
In previous years NGZ has staged exhibitions that had design orientation although they were focused on particular disciplines while Zimbabwe in Design will deal with the marking out property of design as everyone interacts with it daily. The exhibition will be co-curated by Doreen Sibanda and Tandazani Dhlakama.
“While continuing the selection of innovative and ingenious practitioners of design the focus of the NGZ aspires to project Zimbabwe as a brand that produces marketable designs which carry a bearing of quality on global markets,” said the gallery’s information and public relations officer, Zvikomborero Mandangu.
Mandangu said there would also be a session of the Harare Conversations to discuss how best the design scene in Zimbabwe needs to be re-examined.
Mandangu added that Zimbabwe in Design would now take the different facets of design in order to bring to effect cross-pollination of imagery, function and practicality between designers and their wider audience.
The exhibition is set to bring together the most innovative individuals and groups in design across all its disciplines such as fashion, furniture, interiors, graphics, architecture and crafts in order to expose talent.

“The underlying purpose of Zimbabwe in Design is to enlighten the public on how present design is around them and how it influences them to make purchasing decisions besides the face-value aspects of the object,” Mandangu added.
He said over 70 works had so far been submitted in preparation for the exhibition.
