Zimbabwe government should engage South Africa – Biti

MDC-T secretary general Tendai Biti yesterday said the Zanu PF government should swallow its pride and engage South Africa for an economic pact that will see local companies accessing funding at concessionary rates as happened during the Rhodesian era.

Biti, a former Finance minister, told a Press conference in Harare that engaging South Africa would help resuscitate the ailing local industry through cheap funding while at the same time importing from the southern neighbour.

“It is important to engage South Africa like the Rhodesian government that arranged an overdraft facility for companies then,” Biti said, “They should just tuck their tails between their legs and go to negotiate with Tshwane.”

He added that Zimbabwe required an immediate capital injection of $4 billion to stimulate economic activities with most of the money channeled to infrastructure development.

“The money ($4 billion) is needed to oil the economy and unlike the United States that has the luxury to engage in quantitative easing we have to borrow these funds. It then remains imperative that three quarters of the money goes into infrastructure development and the remainder to recapitalise our industry,” he added.

Biti reiterated that there was need for the country to find a political solution to the growing economic and political deterioration.

“The question of GNU II, there is need for dialogue. Zanu PF is clueless and directionless on how to take the economy forward. It’s clear we need dialogue,” he said.

Seven months after July 31, 2013 polls, the economy has remained subdued and more companies have either closed shop or sought voluntary liquidation.

    • @ Youth, copy and paste Rhodesian policies is a vision? Are you reading between the lines and hearing what Biti is actually saying or are you impressed with semi clever words from a mercenary?

      • @scotv;even Zanu pf has inherited Rhodesion laws like AIPPA and POSA but policies which r being alluded by Biti r policies which can benefit Zim politics.I know scotv u have personal vandetar with Wiseman and anointed Tendai Biti

        • So your logic is because ZPF has done it then MDC must also do it? Is there anyone outside ZPF leadership who considers AIPPA and POSA good policies? I certainly don’t think there is such a person. The fact remains, Biti is a little mercenary in short trousers looking to benefit from pushing the interests of oligarchs bigger than Mugabe and ZPF could ever dream to be!

  1. Stop right there Biti dont point fingers if the government needs line of credit they have friends to bail them out don’t talk about US you know nothing about your masters they thrive on other economies for survival, for your own information they owe China 3.6 trillion dollars .

Please give government positive support for a better Zimbabwe by the way ZANU PF the people’s party won to save the nation interests lets rally behind our government and stop criticism bring positive and constructive ideas God bless Zimbabwe

  2. The problem is that South Africa saw a lot in Rhodesia and Rhodesia as bad as ZANU PF paints it respected the rule of law. Today I doubt that the South Africans would be too eager to invest in Zimbabwe given ZANU PF’s disregard for property rights and the rule of law. Add to this the level of corruption, economic decay and economic leadership deficiency and you can be sure the odds of getting a return from your investment are close to one, if anything you stand a very good chance of loosing the money invested.

  3. lets swallow our pride and save the nation. yes politically we won but economically we are in a mess. why do we keep recycling corrupt people. are we saying this country has no other people with brains except the corrupt ones we are always recycling.

    • Capitulating to the one seeking to enslave you is hardly a solution. If you have good ideas to rescue Zimbabwe economically please share them and we will all benefit. It is better to be a poor man standing with your balls intact waiting for your opportunity to be free and independent from whoever is oppressing you (be it ZPF or greedy corporations) than to be a castrated dog in a palace!

  4. It sounds like MDCt is doing good watch dogging but this idea of dialogue and/or fresh elections is just like barking up the wrong tree. where and when on the face of this planet earth do u think zpf will listen to this. it would also appear MDC is now desperate for government space. Why not just positively criticize them and leave them to do it alone until they get to point when they realize they can no longer continue in a solo. the idea of preaching fresh elections, mmmmn, yahhh! yes, almost everyone believes that election were rigged but i doubt if zpf will listen to this. Lets wait, leave it to God and see if zpf will not see sense. otherwise we are just waiting for 2018.

  5. whilst we admit that Biti had some traces of financial acumen, lets us not forget whose interests he was serving. Learned as he is,I wonder why he could be used to destroy his own people, contribute to the downfall of our economy through advocating for sanctions; simply because you want to discredit your fellow brothers out of greed.

  6. Lets just say for argument’s sake the ZANU government were to agree to this GNU2 what does the MDC bring to the table except maybe memories of having two fancy cars each as cabinet ministers? Please do not say they will invite their friends to pour money into government coffers which they failed to do in the last GNU..Why would this happen?

    • MDC T is not able to bring anything to the table of a GNU yet its leadership and supporters believe MDC T can govern a great nation by its leaders’ incompetent, high-handed and filthy hands. Perhaps they have a magic wand which, once waved twice, will bring unity to their party and brains to its leaders; perhaps they will hire the so called miracle men to speak the words and good governance and prosperity will come into being; perhaps TB Josh will lay hands on Morgan Tsvangirai and all his sins will be turned to saint dust and become the Mandela that his handlers anointed him?

Here is my advice to MDC T members and supporters: the real democrats must jump ship and form a serious party; leave this circus act of clowns and magicians to tickle the imaginations of babes in red regalia who never register nor vote but cry rigging!

    • @Kiro- the solution is for the MDCT to go immediately to congress and elect new officers..Proof of a party that has lost its head and its tails is amplified by the new statement from the MDC senior executives Biti and Tsvangirayi..The ink is still to dry on the fact that they said they dont recognise the result of the election and some of us gave them the benefit of doubt, now what is this? What has suddenly changed? I remember somewhere before or after elections Mr. Mugabe intimating that he might want to invite some of the MDC members into government like ZANU did with the Rhodesia Front in 1980..The roar of rejection from the MDC made the Victoria Falls flow in reverse for a few seconds creating the ninth wonder of the world, leaving angels that inhabit that place puzzled..now this? Do these MDC guys listen to themselves when they say some of these things? If anyone needed proof that they need to go to congress here is proof!

    • @ kiropasi, the soultion for mdc t members who have something to contribute to this great nation is to leave mdc t and form a new party. trying to reform mdc t is an exercise in futility. For starters, the party is named after a living man! Secondly, mdc t has the rhodie cloud hanging over its head and that does not win anybody the rural vote, then there is the issue of western handlers and finally a history and record of incompetence, immorality, violence and corruption. MDC T is a circus act with too much baggage, too many idiots at the wheel and so much of the self serving spirit among its leaders; you honestly believe that Zimbabweans will hand all power to this train wreck of a party? I don’t think so.
