MDC-T leader Morgan Tsvangirai has consolidated his grip on the opposition party after he became chief signatory of the party. The development took place during the national executive committee (Nec) meeting on Friday.

BY PAIDAMOYO MUZULU/MOSES MATENGA

The move is seen as curtailing treasurer-General Roy Bennett and his Deputy Elton Mangoma’s influence on leadership renewal calls.

Bennett and Mangoma, the two “purse men” in the MDC-T, have both urged Tsvangirai to step down arguing that he had failed to provide quality leadership to unseat Zanu PF leader Robert Mugabe from power.

In the new setup, the former premier will be the chief signatory to the party’s accounts which had been the preserve of the treasurer-general in accordance with the party’s constitution.

According to the MDC-T constitution, Article 11 sub-section 11.2, the treasurer-general is the custodian of party funds.

A close source told NewsDay: “The Nec resolved to create a financial committee headed by the party’s deputy president Thokozani Khupe and directly answerable to Tsvangirai.”

In the heated meeting, some executive members were baying for Mangoma’s blood and his expulsion from the party.

However, others said the party could not afford to discipline Mangoma for his deeds.

Another source said three committee members pleaded with the meeting not to be too hard on Mangoma.

“Mangoma was blocked from granting any media interviews by the party and his matter was referred to a disciplinary hearing for putting the name of the party into disrepute. The hearing is not for his opinion which the executive agreed was his democratic right, the problem was the platform he used,” the source said.

Another official said the way the agenda was set was meant to shut debate on the Tsvangirai-Mangoma fallout.

Tsvangirai’s spokesperson Luke Tamborinyoka declined to comment on the matter saying his boss was concentrating on national issues affecting the country.

“All the robust debate speaks to the democracy that exists in the MDC. The party does not speak democracy, it lives democracy,” Tamborinyoka said.

Meanwhile, Tsvangirai is today expected to meet diplomats accredited to Zimbabwe and brief them of the state of the nation.

    • why go there, why not be too democratic and let people discuss succession issues openly like you demand that the ZANU(PF) do when it comes to Bob. Zviiteyiwoka zvamunoda kuti vamwe vaite, does the MDC-T live these words: “Do as I say and not as I do” democracy please

  1. kana TM achibva nekut akadyiwa mangoma waka winner here hu MP kana usina then ur the first culprit yakadyisa TM hauna kunoita basa rako vaidya mari yeCDF so kana uchitadza kumiririra vanhu thousand ko kuzoti million nxaaaa this stupid mangoma must not bi intertained

  2. But what is it that Bennet and Mangoma has done to make sure millions of youths are on the voters roll?

We are the people who vote and we know very much mrt chances on a free, fair poll.

  3. Mangoma, and Bennet should be booted from the party for using their treasurer positions and influence to deny the party funding in the July 2013.Now they wanted to use the same starving with insincere leadership renewal calls.Insencere because Mangoma was part of the chief negotiators of the GNU and part of it’s ministers.Worse still he belongs to the highest decision making bodies of the party who give advice to the leader so in essence, setting aside private life, these goons are equally to blame for party’s shortcomings. In any case any future successor of Morgan need Morgan’s support and blessings and you don’t get these by first throwing your excreta and feaces at Morgan.

  4. Removing tsvangirai is not a priority.
Right now noone can win a poll in zim as long as Zec and Mudede are in control.
The RG deliberately ommited millions of people from elections and are seriously abusing voter slips to Zanus benefit.
Whta can we do to claim back our right to vote?

  5. Its not called MDC-T for nothing. Its tsvangirayi’s Party, MDC-Tsvangirai. Mangoma is free to form MDC-Mangoma. We already have MDC-Ncube, MDC-Mutambara and MDC-Sikhala!

    • Tell them, Simba. There is no point in being a signatory of an empty bank account. In any case, it paints a very bad picture of a party president who overcontrols issues. It seems greed has overtaken Morgan. He is badly advised by the likes of Tamborinyoka and Lovemore Moyo.

  6. Morgan is the face of any political party with the name MDC.He is the architecture of this struggle.Roy Bennet,Ian Kay and Mangoma have a democratic right to air their views to the party but not through the press.Mangoma and Kay lost their seats in their respective constituencies because they did not campaign well.Trhey did not have an manifesto i guess but my own understanding is that the whole election was sharm.Roy Bennet is in exile and he should shut up his mouth.Bennet is a coward who would wet his underwear at the mere mention of the word ZANU PF.Stay where you are Roy and forget about MDC and Zimbabwe. The time for congress shall come in 2016 and thats the time everyone in the MDC structures is going to decide whether President Morgan should go or not.At the moment leave him as our president please. If you are not happy you can start your own party Mr Mangoma.

    • Varume ngatisabatira kana kurambira mungoro isina mombe pajoki. Nekuti tinoramba takamira. Moving forward: Congress, congress, congress soon.

Let Tsvangirai’s continued leadership be confirmed by the people. If Tsvangirai wins then all these challenges will die a natural death. In the face of such unprecedented challenges, why is the MDC leader shying away from the solution?

  9. Mangoma in front runner yeZanu Pf, see he benefited from the RBZ mechanisation scheme. He was sent to cause confusion and render the party ineffective. He is a sell out

  10. MUCHAMUDEMBA MANGOMA IYEYU WAMURI KUITA SEKUNGE AMWAIWA TSVINA YEBERE.

    ASINGAZIVE!!! NGAASAOMA MUSORO

  11. Everyone benefitted from Zanu PF schemes. Mangoma got farm implements way back then. Tsvangirai then gota wife from Zanu PF Macheka. Now he gets dictatorial tendencies from the same organisation and becomes a chief signatory of everything even if the Party constitution is not yet amended to make this possible. Maybe, we should just keep the authentic Zanu PF instead of having many versions and varieties of the same, some forms of which are clearly weird and contaminated.

  12. Tsvangirai is the one who will never win any elections again in Zimbabwe, nyangwe zuva rikabuda nekumavirazuva. Imbimbindoga iyi. Isu toda Mangoma for the purpose of moving forward. We can not celebrate a merry go round forever. Takambokupa chance yako Tsvangirai chienda. Unourayisa vanhu mahara iwe.

  13. Chimwe chikwata tasa, Mangoma buried himself.Your name is being deleted from the anals of democracy for the poor. You are self-centred

  14. All this when the country is burning from zanu pf corruption. Not a word from mdct on course of action. How about demos for commission of enquiry. Or are they quiet bcoz one of them is defending the chief thief at rbz from allegations from his equally corrupt surbodinate. Maybe an overhaul is due to give us a chance to deal with zanu pf’s cheating machinery before we dream of ever winning an election.

    • Its all becoz we dnt ve the right man to move the ship forward in the opposition, all these ideas are good but who will call for their implementation when the president of the opposition z busy solving his social problemz caused by his affair with Zanu PF women.

  15. kkkkk mangoma ko kungodzikama .. Hazvina kuipa kutaura pfugwa yako chakaipa kutaura dzisiri dzako unozopinda busy

  18. Mangoma “usatambe nevanhuuuuuuuuu, vanhu vanotupandukiraaaa”. How can a rat romove or replace an elephant???? Mangoma you are very learned but you are not educated. Your have endorsed your own demise. Better join Mabhuku or sabhuku Welshman. Tsvangirai is the only colossal who will remove Zanu PF from power.

    • Tsvangirai z not educated and not wise, he shud knw kuti the love of women leads to demise, not of his own but even of the party.

  19. Ladies and gentlemen i would like to refer to you an article in todays Herald: Makoni can save MDC by non other than MAI jukwa. I found the article to be well thot out and factual. Please read it and contribute to the current debate with its substance in mind. Please read the article and not comment on the heading as most zimbos are used to. Thanks

  20. why silencing dissenting voices…. there should be diversity of minds for a part to flourish….mdc is bigger than invidual& there should be no sacred cows when it comes to public scrutiny of those who claim to be democratic leaders.

    …….

  21. A SOLIDLY empowered and economically liberated majority has been emerging at the same time as opposition politics in Zimbabwe has been relegated to bedroom buffoonery and Diasporan duplicity. The regrettable reality is that Zimbabwe lacks real opposition and a credible alternative to the ruling Zanu PF. The country is endowed with oppositional mediocrity with absent ideological foundations, a vacant vision and values and mere gimmicks of substance-free empty proclamations of democracy, rule of law and civil liberties.

Some opportunistic opposition options have sprouted internally and externally in the Diaspora on the frail foundations of the “Mugabe-must-go” money-spinning “ideology” with very little in terms of substance and structures. As the actuality of ownership and economic empowerment becomes concrete and absolute and as the opposition continue to descend into cosmic and comic concussion, the reality of Zanu PF dominating Zimbabwean politics for the next fifty years becomes less and less abstract.

  22. Hokoyo nenhamo! Popopopo…zvava zvinhu!! Come 2018….hee Nukuv….hee stolen…hee illegitimate …heee pwetere pwetere!

  23. If the party constitution has not been amended to allow the party President to be the main signatory, why is this happening?

It is being argued that the party does not have a problem with Mangoma’s view, but rather the fact that the letter found it’s way into the public domain and therefore he is responsible for leaking it. This is pathetic nonsense. For starters, why should a discussion about leadership renewal be confidential?

Secondly, if leaks to the press are such heinous crimes, how come we always get to know all the stuff that happens during these supposedly confidential meetings? How come all the details of the confidential meeting where Mangoma was dressed down are in the public domain? Who leaked the details and what is going to happen to him/her?

And by the way, what is Tsvangirai going to do about Thokozani Khupe who was found guilty of fanning violence in the party? What is he going to do about those who abused the constituency development fund? Zilch. Bottom line is he has been at the helm the party for 15 years and is now behaving like Mugabe; corruption, violence and overstaying. He is purging all who challenge him. Pathetic.

  24. TSVANGIRAI IS JUST A YOUNGER VERSION OF MUGABE, WITHOUT THE BRAINS THOUGH!!! Mangoma never said he wants to take over he is simply saying let’s not move as if we are blind. Lets take introspection. It is very easy to always have reasons for our failure on outside forces, but why not try to increase our power and force from within to defeat the enemy. Tsvangirai has done so much, that we are so grateful about, we are not saying he is useless, NO. We need MORE!! the MORE we need does not mean Morgan, NO NO! It’s like a relay guys. It’s like we are racing a team that take drugs before the race, and somehow manage to beat the detectors all the time. Now we need to beat them at their own game. We need a BOLT, where drugs or no drugs it’s a win. Thats why we say we appreciate Mr Tsvangirai he has run a good run but to win this we need MORE!!

  27. Thats the culture we can not condone, ZPF wz quick t fire Mavhaire, his statement could have changed a lot, differencies improve manageial skills. It z wrong really for a party full of learned pple to think that the first person to lead the party gets indefinite terms in the office and is immune what ever the case.

We dont elect leaders to claim ownership of the organization the next day. If someone has bundled for too long they must go as per procedure. Whats wrong with all these learned leaders. Come to think of it, Tsvangirai actually date Zanu women, and he is currently married to a ZANU woman, how then do you condemn your in-laws. Vanhu ve MDC makavata, hope chaidzo, u will not get into power anytime soon, not in this generation.

  28. Eish Moggy doesn’t want to let go… eh maone… Imagine he had won and been sworn into office? Even worse. Looks like he would become the only signatory to the reserve bank if he had won

  30. Was Mai Jukwa’s article on today’ s Herald read through by Editor and Hon Minister…..??? interesting article though….

  31. Very biased reporting. It’s quite obvious this newspaper is biased towards Tsvangirai. One thing that is as sure as day follows night is that MDC-T will never ever unseat ZanuPF, now and in the future, all things being equal. MDCs are using the wrong strategy. Tsvangirai is a failed politician wasting political space. Clueless. Mangoma must be told that 90% of the people are ignorant and are led by emotion, not reasoning. They adore those who constantly lie to them not those who tell them home truths.
Mangoma, Tsvangirai and all those in MDC-T have the wrong perceptions about the political situation. Tsvangirai said ZanuPF, which is the military as some of us know except those in MDC-T, had turned the last election into a “military operation”. How then does Tsvangirai or Mangoma or MDC-T hope to stop ZanuPF turning the next election into a “military operation”? This is the question MDC-T blind supporters should be asking themselves.

  32. @ thoughts. U read the article. Intresting stuff i wish the pipo here would read the article. @ musona please read the article cos i think ur contribution gels well with amai jukwas analysis

    • @Kiro – in which way is my analysis the same as someone called amai jukwa? I have posed a million dollar question – Tsvangirai said ZanuPF, which is the military as some of us know except those in MDC-T, had turned the last election into a “military operation”. How then does Tsvangirai or Mangoma or MDC-T hope to stop ZanuPF turning the next election into a “military operation”?
That is what people should be asking themselves and see if they can come up with an answer instead of comparing me to your amai jukwa.

  33. Morgiza agarisa. Original constitution yaiti munhu haarambe ari panyanga for more than 10 years. Morgi handiende Mugabe. pamberi naMangoma. Chikoro chishoma is dangerous. dicttator ane gwanaz ari better pana dictator asina gwanaz

  34. @ Musona. U didnt read the article. It was was to read the article first b4 responding to me. Amai julwa has got answers to your question. One thing for sure is Tsvangirayi will not rule this country but MDC can with the right candidate and ofcourse with Tsvangirayis blessing. Rda the article boss. The analysis is spot on, uwouldnt expect the herald to publish such

  35. Sorry for errors in the above post. I meant it would hve been wise for you to read the article first. Its in the herald: ‘Makoni can save MDC’.
Why not when they had a lose pact in the previous election. Morgan shud retire and concentrate on his family and friends. By the way i was a big supporter of MDC, now i don know bt am nt zanu pf

    • I agree with amai jukwa that “Those close to him (Tsvangirai) fear a new leadership could prejudice their interests”. Simba Makoni would be a good leader but there’s no chance of Simba Makoni leading MDC-T. There has been similar case in Zimbabwe nationalists’ history which have been tried before, for example, at one point Muzorewa was chosen as a neutral leader in the mid-1970s to try and unify rival Zapu and Zanu and Muzorewa actually went to Mozambique and stayed for some months but he gave up because some in Zanu and some in Zapu felt their positions were under threat in a united party. The military will not accept Simba Makoni. There‘s a an unbreakable bond of backscratching between Mugabe and the military which might not suit Simba Makoni. Simba Makoni joining MDC-T is hypothetical situation and highly unlikely. But the biggest problem facing MDCs or any other party (with or without Simba Makoni) is how to stop the military from actively participating in the civilian politics/elections. For as long as the situation remains as it is it will be pointless holding elections in 2018 because they will only be one winner – ZanuPF.
