TEACHERS in Mashonaland East Province yesterday claimed they had been forced to contribute $2 each towards President Robert Mugabe’s 90th birthday celebrations to be held in Marondera this month-end.

Some teachers who spoke to NewsDay on condition of anonymity claimed that several Zanu PF activists were moving around all schools in the province ordering teachers to contribute $2 each for the Zanu PF leader’s birthday bash.

The deadline was last Monday, the teachers said.

However, Zanu PF spokesperson Rugare Gumbo said he was not aware of the alleged fundraising programme and referred all questions to the party’s secretary for youth affairs, Absolom Sikhosana.

However, Sikhosana, whose office is responsible for all fundraising activities for the birthday celebrations, was not reachable while Zanu PF Mashonaland East provincial chairperson Ray Kaukonde was not picking calls.

Zanu PF plans to raise approximately $1 million for the bash which will be held on February 23 at Rudhaka Stadium in Marondera to mark Mugabe’s 90th birthday.

Progressive Teachers’ Union of Zimbabwe secretary-general Raymond Majongwe said members of his union had been approached by Zanu PF activists and ordered to pay the money.

“We have received the reports. It is now a perennial problem. Zanu PF should put this to a stop,” Majongwe said.

“This is extortion. Teachers should not be forced. Those who want should do so voluntarily. Why are they milking a stone? Teachers do not have the money.

“What is more disturbing is that several groups from women’s league, youths, war veterans and so on are visiting the same teachers demanding money. Some teachers will end up parting with about $10.

“Some district education officers are actually writing to teachers ordering them to pay, instead of protecting the teachers from such illegal behaviour.”

Teachers’ Union of Zimbabwe chief executive officer Manuel Nyawo said it was disturbing that Zanu PF had targeted teachers.

Zimbabwe Teachers’ Association chief executive officer Sifiso Ndlovu urged teachers not to give in to unscrupulous groups who come in the name of Zanu PF to squeeze them out of their hard earned money.

“That is illegal, inhuman and a cruelty to the teachers’ economic rights. Teachers should not be forced, those who want to contribute should do so willingly,” Ndlovu said.

    • Would it not make more sense if Mai Mujuru and Absolom Skhosana appealed to those well connected managers in parastatals and local government, to contribute a mere one tenths of their salaries/allowances to this birthday bash. These are the main beneficiaries of our hard won independence and should be seen to be giving back to the very hand that has fed them for the past 34 years. To force teachers to part with $2 at a time even the peanuts they were awarded in January has not even been effected on their salaries is being evil.

  5. This is taking bhora mugedhi too far. Those civil servants who want to contribute to the bash can do so on their own, but to force all of us to do so is totally unacceptable. I am sure Mai Mujuru will endorse these sinister, fraudulant, clandestine, nefarious and detestable actions.

  10. I remember this overzealous headmistress at Pachanza Primary school in Mt Darwin declaring after the Presidential elections of 2002 declaring that her teachers were not a problem and would contribute $5000 each. It was still a lot of money then and we had to call the local war veterans leadership to distance ourselves from that decision and the money had to be revised downwards. I feel for teachers because they have no choice or else they will be hounded

  11. These crimals ruling our beloved country need to be removed by force .People are oppressed and suffering worse than during colonial era. These cold blooded vampires dont care about us. They have got multiple farms, diamonds , gold ,platinum, fleet of cars, houses, companies, which they got not out of hard working but out of looting , still they go on milking poor teachers. Ana Chiyangwa vanogara Vachimama kutaura heee inindinemari achivhairira povo hee nduwe yangu inotenga chikapfu chenyu chamunodya gore rese. Y cant they ask that 1 million from Phidza or from these biggest thieves, cashbert, Hopson, savior, Obert, chombo, Joyce etc.

  12. Why do they force teachers to contribute towards mugabe’s birthday and not new farmers who were given planting seeds and fertilizers for free and were allowed to loot the farms when they invaded them. Poor teachers have not received salary increases for the past 3 years
Just last month an increase was promised but nothing is happening this month. Please leave the teachers to do their work although they are underpaid l also suggest that the police investigate this matter because this is extortion and those caught off side must be prosecuted.

Kana ave kuda mari yangu anotanga andirova nechibhakera

  18. In most countries this is blackmail or extortion but in Zimbabwe it is considered okay if carried out by the war veterans. Most of whom are to young to have participated in the war. Standard practice for a country that doesn’t want to be independent. I hope President Mugabe sings for his supper provided by others.
