Jongwe, who scored 55 runs, in another losing cause against South Africa in the group stages, top scored for Zimbabwe with 50 runs as they were restricted to 193 for nine in their allotted 50 overs while chasing Bangladesh’s 265.

Earlier Bangladesh got off to a perfect start after winning the toss and elected to bat first.

Mosaddek Hossain Saikat hit a well-constructed 83 not out and lifted his side to 265 for six in their allotted 50 overs.

Openers Shadman Islam (34) and Joyraz Sheik (58) had laid the foundation for a competitive score as they shared an opening stand of 64 runs.

After Islam was dismissed in the 17th over Litton Das (47) added 77 runs with Sheik for the third wicket before sharing another 41-run fourth partnership stand with Hossain.

Zimbabwe’s run chase began well but they failed to capitalise from solid 47-run opening partnership stand from Tinashe Kamhunukamwe (13) and Charles Kunje (26).

After Kamhunukamwe was clean bowled by Mehedy Hasan in the 16th over, Zimbabwe lost wickets at regular intervals and were soon in deep trouble on 65 for five after losing five wickets for just 26 runs in a space of five overs.

Captain Malcolm Lake (38) and Jongwe (50) took the score to 111 before the former, as well as Patrick Mambo (0), fell in the same over to lave Zimbabwe reeling at 115 for seven in 37 overs.

All-rounder Jongwe used his power to strike four fours and a six and lift Zimbabwe’s run rate, but wickets fell around him before he was dismissed in the 47th over. He shared 62 runs for the eight wicket with Deven Bell who finished unbeaten on 30 runs.
