However, six months of Elvis Tafi Makanya’s sentence were wholly suspended for five years, while a further six months were commuted to 210 hours of unpaid work at Chikonohono Primary School.

Allegations against Makanya were that on January 7, 2014 and at around 12 noon, the complainant Darlington Chifuwo (28), who is employed by the Zimbabwe Defence Forces and stationed at Inkomo Barracks, gave his car, a Toyota Gaia registration ADB 5845 to Makanya who was touting at Gadzema rank.

The two agreed to meet at Pfungwadzakanaka shopping centre, Chikonohono, later on the same day as Chifuwo wanted to go to Mpata suburb.

It was not stated in court papers if the two knew each other prior to the incident.

The court further heard that Makanya instead did not go to the rendezvous as agreed, but went to use the vehicle for personal gain.

Makanya allegedly drove to Harare, before going on a trip to Hurungwe using the vehicle as a pirate taxi.

On January 8, Chifuwo filed a police report after failing to locate the tout.

Investigations led to the recovery of the car at Zvipani business centre, Hurungwe, on January 11, with Makanya busy loading passengers.

Trust Mukarati prosecuted while Sam Chitumwa presided over the matter.
