Phiri, who is also the CAPS United president, said yesterday he was still weighing a number of options before making a decision.

He said he wanted to consult widely first and then come up with a decision.

“I am still to make a decision about contesting. I need to consult widely first and then come up with a decision. I will announce my decision after those consultations,” Phiri said.

The PSL elections are scheduled for February 23.

Submissions for names opened on January 23 with February 11 being the closing date for the nominations.

The electoral committee is set to meet on February 13 to vet the candidates before the final list is announced.

Should he decide to seek re-election, Phiri will face his counterpart Keni Mubaiwa who is also chairman of Dynamos.

Mubaiwa said Dynamos have been for the past five years throwing around the idea of leading the top-flight league.

He said the time was now ripe for them to lead and bring in sponsors.

“There have been hot issues like sponsorship, our sponsors have not been happy for a long time. I want to bring back a smile on their faces. As Dynamos, we have for the past years wanted that chairman’s post, but it has not been possible, so this time, we are coming for it. In the past, there have been cases of two or three clubs failing to fulfil fixtures due to poor planning that characterised our league, of which it must be a thing of the past,” Mubaiwa told our sister paper The Standard.

Mubaiwa’s secretary at Dynamos Webster Chikengezha is also understood to be interested in running for the post although he has to be cleared by the club’s founding fathers.

Under Phiri’s tenure, PSL sealed a landmark broadcasting deal with Supersport where over 50 matches were broadcast live last season, including the BancABC Sup8r and the Mbada Diamonds Cup final.

The league is yet to renew their sponsorship deal with Delta Beverages.
