ZIMBABWE’S Under-19 cricket team ended their campaign at the Cricket South Africa (CSA) Franchise Cubs Week on a losing note

ZIMBABWE’S Under-19 cricket team ended their campaign at the Cricket South Africa (CSA) Franchise Cubs Week on a losing note after falling to Sunfoil Dolphins by 97 runs in Stellenbosch, South Africa on Thursday.

BY DANIEL NHAKANISO SPORTS REPORTER

The national youth team, which was using the tournament to prepare for next month’s ICC Under-19 World Cup in the UAE, was bowled out for 133 runs while chasing the Dolphins competitive target of 233 runs.

Stephen Kamhunukamwe was the only Zimbabwean batsman to offer some resistance with a fighting knock of 44 runs as the other batsmen failed to convert their good starts.

The defeat was Zimbabwe’s fourth loss of the campaign and ensured the Walter Chawaguta-coached side finished the tournament with just one win from five outings in South Africa.

Zimbabwe’s lone victory in South Africa came on Wednesday when they beat the Chevrolet Warriors by two wickets.

This was also the Warriors’ first defeat in the tournament. Zimbabwe put up a superb bowling display courtesy through Kieran Geyle (4/19) and Dylan Hondo (3/23) to bowl out the Warriors for a paltry 129.

Zimbabwe reached the winning runs in the 48th over. The Warriors pair of Bradley Bopp (3/23) and Richard Maree (3/24) made Zimbabwe work hard for their runs, but in the end the visitors secured a well-earned win. The victory against the warriors becomes the first win by a Zimbabwean U19 side since the 2012 ICC U19 Cricket World Cup.

Zimbabwe last competed at a quadrangular tournament in India last year, which featured the hosts, Australia and South Africa, finishing the tour without a single win.
