Madanhire was, prior to the appointment, editor of The Standard. Walter Marwizi, who was The Standard deputy editor, takes over as editor of the weekly.

The appointments, which are with immediate effect, are part of a major restructuring exercise of the editorial team as AMH moves towards a converged newsroom. Further editorial changes will be announced in due course.

Madanhire has worked as a journalist since 1990. In 1996 he became the editor of The Financial Gazette, then the only private newspaper in Zimbabwe. He was part of the team that launched The Daily News at the turn of the millennium.

In 2002, he was the founding editor of The Business Tribune, another privately-owned business weekly which, because of its fiercely independent editorial policy, was shut down by government two years later.

He became deputy editor of the Zimbabwe Independent in November 2009, but was in February 2010 moved to The Standard as editor, a position he has held until this week when he takes over at NewsDay. He has also worked in public relations.

An award-winning journalist, Marwizi has vast media experience, spanning over 17 years.

Among his numerous journalistic highlights was being selected the 2003 CNN Free Press Africa Award winner for his outstanding work on the continent which demonstrated journalistic excellence, courage and integrity while operating in often difficult African media environments.

In 2005, Marwizi, who was news editor for The Standard, was selected by Reuters to undertake an international journalistic fellowship at Oxford University in the United Kingdom.

As the Reuters Memorial Fellow, he spent six months studying at the Green College, gaining invaluable insights into the journalism profession.

He returned home where three years later, he was appointed deputy editor of the The Standard.

In that position, Marwizi was tasked with overseeing the newsroom’s newsgathering and story editing operations, while helping the editor to produce The Standard.
