KWEKWE jailbreaker Moses Makotore, who enjoyed the New Year’s Day celebrations in hiding after breaking out of Kwekwe Prison on December 30 last year has been sentenced to an effective five-year jail term for escaping from lawful custody.

In passing sentence yesterday, provincial magistrate Letwin Rwodzi said Makotore had proved to be an unrepentant convict although he had pleaded guilty to the charge.

“Escaping from lawful custody is a serious offence and your actions have proved to this court that you are unrepentant and therefore only a lengthy custodial sentence would serve the ends of justice,” said Rwodzi.

The court heard that Makotore took advantage of the relaxed security at the prison complex and scaled down the security wall before escaping unnoticed. He sought refuge at Sand Boys Mine in Silobela where his younger brother works, but was arrested following a tipoff on January 4 this year.

Before his jailbreak, Makotore had served half of his six-month jail term for unlawful entry and theft.

Makotore told the court that he had decided to break out of prison after police detectives continued to visit him threatening to “deal” with him at the end of his jail term.

  1. Voila!! the court fell for it. Four and half years into this five-year sentence he is going to fake another escape, he will get arrested, gets another 5-year sentence again; imimi muchifunga kuti murikumukaurisa. Such is his plan, to stay in prison until the Zim economy improves!!
