Yesterday, a six-member Civil Protection Unit (CPU) team made up  of Chiredzi District CPU chairperson Clara Muzenda, Masvingo police chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Martha Mafolo, Four Brigade’s Brigadier-General Chancellor Diye,  Tongaat  Hullets’ corporate affairs manager Adelaide Chikunguru, human resources manager Fred Nyangwe and Chiredzi police boss Chief Superintendent  Engelbert Wilson visited families to check on their safety.

The compound is located about 10 metres away from the flood-prone Checheche stream.

Nyangwe told the visiting team that his company raised the alarm on Monday after the stream filled to capacity and introduced an all-round human surveillance security team as well as electronic alarm systems that will alert people when disaster is about to strike.

“The company has put in place a mechanism that will ensurepeople’s lives are not in danger. We have put in place alarm systems that will help to alert people. We have established a command centre where immediate and necessary rescuing of people shall be done,” Nyangwe said.

He said the company had also erected a tent where a rescue team will be stationed to respond to any disaster calls.  Last year, the compound experienced a disastrous incident where flash floods destroyed property in all the houses at the compound.

“We are mobilising resources to permanently remove these people from here to another place, but this cannot be done overnight,” he said.
